Free Throws Seal Chowan MBB's Win Over Bowie State

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Late free throws in the final minute lift the Chowan Men's Basketball team over Bowie State at home in a CIAA Northern Division clash on Saturday evening.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Demetrius Sanders continued his scoring output with his third straight 25+ point outing with 26 points on 9-15 shooting from the floor.  Sanders added six rebounds on the evening.

Gus Rowland tallied 16 points along with 14 from Robert Grubbs and 13 points from Tim Hewett.

The Hawks scored a season-high 55 points in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Both teams traded baskets throughout the opening half as the Hawks led 31-30 at the break.

Tim Hewett opened up the scoring with a jumper.  A dunk by Demetrius Sanders and a jumper by Dino Muminovic allowed the Hawks to lead 6-4.

The Bulldogs led by three, 14-11, midway through the half until a layup by Demetrius Sanders and a jumper by Dino Muminovic handed the lead back to Chowan, 15-14.

Bowie State continued to fight for the lead as the score was tied four more times in the opening 20 minutes.

Ugljesa Portic and Gus Rowland converted from the stripe to give the Hawks a 31-30 lead heading into the locker room.

Second Half:

The Hawks went on an 8-1 run to start the second half to take hold of the contest.  Tim Hewett hit a jumper before back-to-back threes by Robert Grubbs and Gus Rowland opened up an eight point lead for the Hawks, 39-31.

Chowan would push their advantage to double-figures midway through the half as Demetrius Sanders scored the next six points for the Hawks.  Tim Hewett and Robert Grubbs added two points in the swing.

In the middle portion of the half, Chowan maintained a double-figure lead seeing their lead swell to 14, 68-54, after Gus Rowland knocked down a trey with 6:04 remaining.

Down the stretch Bowie State outscored the Hawks 29-18 going 8-11 from the floor and 11-13 from the stripe.

Bowie State chipped away at the deficit closing the gap to one, 75-74, with 2:14 remaining before two freebies by Gus Rowland and jumper by Dino Muminovic pushed the lead back to five, 79-74.

The Bulldogs would keep fighting closing the gap to one on two separate occasions.  BSU had a chance to tie the contest at 84-all as the Bulldogs missed the front end of three attempts at the stripe.

Tim Hewett sealed the win with a pair with 1.3 seconds left on the clock.  The final attempt by the Bulldogs hit off the back iron.

UP NEXT

Chowan will look to run their win streak to four games as the Hawks host Lincoln (Pa.) on Wednesday, February 21.  The Hawks will honor Tim Hewett, Trevis Buckhanon, and Dino Muminovic for senior night.  The contest is a part of CU's 10th Annual Play4Kay contest.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm.
