Hawks Basketball Finish Against Salem, 79-74

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Men's Basketball team got revenge against Salem in a 79-74 victory in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.

Gus Rowland dished out a school record 14 assists on the night to pick up a double-double with 11 points.

Demetrius Sanders continued his scoring burst with 24 points connecting on 10-16 from the floor.  Robert Grubbs knocked down 60% (6-10) from behind the arc on his way to 20 points.

Tim Hewett scored 13 points and had eight rebounds.  Dino Muminovic tallied nine points and 10 rebounds.  Muminovic added three blocks to his school record season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Chowan and Salem traded points throughout the opening half as the Hawks led 35-29 at the break.  Demetrius Sanders scored the first eight points for the Hawks with two dunks as Salem led 10-8 early.

Dino Muminovic and Robert Grubbs joined the scoring barrage with back-to-back threes to match the Tigers.  Muminovic added a layup and a put-back to knot the contest at 18-all with about eight minutes left in the half.

Robert Grubbs knocked down a pair of triples to give the Hawks a slight 24-23 lead.  A 6-0 burst by the Hawks allowed Chowan to capture the lead, 30-25.  Tim Hewett knocked down a jumper before Demetrius Sanders recorded his third dunk of the contest and a jumper during the run.

The Hawks traded threes to end the half leading 35-29.

Second Half:

Coming out of the locker room, Chowan went on the attack pushing the advantage to double-figures, 41-29 to force a timeout.  Demetrius Sanders connected from the floor twice along with a jumper by Tim Hewett.

Salem took the lead for 22 seconds following a 16-2 run, 48-46, with 11:37 remaining in the half.  Robert Grubbs knocked down a triple to spark a 17-5 run for the Hawks to push the lead back to double-figures, 63-53.  Trevis Buckhanon continued the run with a dunk before the Tigers connected from deep.

Demetrius Sanders converted from the stripe along with a Gus Rowland layup and Tim Hewett's three-point play.  Dino Muminovic joined the action with a jumper from the elbow and was capped off with a jumper by Sanders.

With three minutes to play, Salem cut the deficit to three, 71-68, after an 8-0 run.  Chowan would go 6-7 from the stripe to end the contest as Tim Hewett found Demetrius Sanders for the final dunk of the night to put the contest on ice.

UP NEXT

Chowan heads back into CIAA Northern Division action on Saturday, February 17 against Bowie State at home.  Tip-off is slated for 4pm.
