Hawks Continue Strong Start With Win Over Cheyney

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The regionally ranked Chowan Men's Basketball team continued their winning streak with an 85-65 victory over Cheyney on Tuesday evening.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Gus Rowland and Demetrius Sanders scored 22 and 20 points respectively in the win.  Rowland tallied six rebounds and eight assists.

Michael Kelly recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.  Timothy Bing and Robert Grubbs chipped in with 12 and 10 points each.

Chowan's defense held Cheyney to seven second half field goals and forced the Wolves to 0-10 from behind the arc in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Both teams traded the lead early as Robert Grubbs knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to open the contest.

Cheyney would lead 12-8 before Gus Rowland knocked down a triple.  Demetrius Sanders went on a five point run himself to even the score at 18-all.

The Wolves would continue their hot shooting from behind the arc to lead 31-27.  Demetrius Sanders would connect from deep to keep the Hawks in the contest.

A flurry of scoring possessions on both sides pushed the score to 39-34 in favor of the Wolves with Michael Kelly scoring two buckets.

The Hawks dominated the final 2:42 of the opening half going on a 12-2 run to lead 46-41 at the halftime whistle.  Gus Rowland started the run with five straight points converting the old-fashioned three-point play.  Robert Grubbs added a layup on the fast break before Michael Kelly knocked down a jumper and Xavier Young hit from behind the arc.

Second Half:

Timothy Bing and Demetrius Sanders started the scoring for the Hawks in the second half pushing the lead to 52-43.

Following the under 15 minute media timeout, Timothy Bing gave the Hawks a double-digit lead with a triple.  Gus Rowland sparked a quick 8-0 run with a layup and a three-pointer.  Michael Kelly stepped out for a connection to extend the lead to 67-51 and force a timeout.

A small run by the Wolves would be countered with a 9-0 run as Michael Kelly started the run with a put-back jumper.  Timothy Bing converted the three-point play and Demetrius Sanders tallied a dunk in transition.

Six straight points for the Hawks came at the charity stripe to continue the run allowing the Hawks to empty the bench for the easy win.

Chowan hosts St. Augustine's in a CIAA cross-divisional contest on Tuesday, December 11.  Tip-off is at 7:30pm.
