Hawks Start Fast Against Falcons, Stay Unbeaten In CIAA

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team used a fast start to out-pace the visiting St. Augustine's Falcons in CIAA action on Monday afternoon to remain unbeaten in league play, 66-38.

Danielle Weldon tallied her fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 15 rebounds.

Jordan Pettaway paced the offense with 13 points with nine points in the first half on 4-4 shooting.  Joanne Williams tallied 10 points, while Olivia Gaither and Mariah Coker chipped in with nine points each.

Chowan held St. Augustine's to eight points in the first and second quarters.  The Hawks scored 19 points in the first and third quarters.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Chowan lead 9-2 early forcing the Falcons to call a timeout just 3:36 into the contest.  Jada Lee and Danielle Weldon posted the first four points for the Hawks with a pair of layups.  After a bucket by SAU, Lee knocked down a triple from the right wing to keep the momentum before Weldon added a layup on a put-back to force the timeout.

Out of the timeout, St. Augustine's would score three points to trim the deficit, but Danielle Weldon went back to work down low with another layup.  Jordan Pettaway scored two buckets along with a jumper by Kaylah Henderson to stretch the lead to 17-5.

The Falcons hit a three-pointer before Jordan Pettaway scored a layup before the end of the quarter to lead 19-8.

Second Quarter:

The first 96 seconds of the quarter was dominated by the Hawks going on a 10-3 run.  Jordan Pettaway and Danielle Weldon would score a layup each before Mariah Coker and Olivia Gaither knocked down triples to lead 29-11.

After a pair of free throws, Teylahna Green added a layup before the Falcons scored the final five points of the half to give the Hawks a 34-16 advantage heading into the locker room.

Third Quarter:

Olivia Gaither put the Hawks on the board in the second half with a three-pointer.  Mariah Coker followed suit with a triple.  Jada Lee knocked down a jumper to give the Hawks a 44-18 lead with 6:06 remaining in the quarter.

Kaylah Henderson swapped a bucket with the Falcons.  Danielle Weldon added a layup to double-up the Falcons, 49-24, midway through the quarter.

Joanne Williams converted for a pair at the stripe before Jordan Pettaway tallied a layup for the final basket for the Hawks in the quarter to lead 53-26 heading to the final quarter.

Fourth Quarter:

Just like ending the third, Jordan Pettaway started the fourth with a bucket.  The Falcons would go on a 10-0 run as Coach LaToya Jones emptied her bench.

Joanne Williams ended the run with a layup midway through the final stanza sparking a run for the Hawks.  Mariah Coker knocked down a three-pointer and Joanne Williams hit the front-end of the three-point play and converted a three-point play on the next possession to push the lead to 65-36.

Brianna Copeland went 1-2 from the stripe for the final point for the Hawks in the contest.

UP NEXT

Chowan has the remainder of the 2018 calendar year off from competition.  The Hawks will host non-conference member, Catawba, to start the New Year on January 3.  Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm.
