Hawks Use Balanced Scoring To Defeat Broncos

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team improved to 2-0 in the CIAA after a 72-47 victory over Fayetteville State in league action on Thursday evening.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Danielle Weldon led the team with 15 points on 7-11 shooting.  Jordan Pettaway and Olivia Gaither chipped in with 13 and 11 points respectively.

Jada Lee (9), Mariah Coker (8), and Joanne Williams (7) continued the balanced attack.  Williams tallied 11 rebounds on the evening.

Chowan's defense held the Broncos to 1-9 from behind the arc.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Fayetteville State raced out to an early 6-3 lead with Olivia Gaither knocking down a three-pointer.  Danielle Weldon notched a jumper in the paint and a putback by Mariah Coker gave the Hawks a 7-6 advantage. 

Back-to-back triples by Mariah Coker and Olivia Gaither continued the lead for the Hawks at 15-8.  A layup by Danielle Weldon capped off the 8-0 run.

The Broncos trimmed the deficit to 16-14 but Mariah Coker knocked down a three-pointer to push the lead back to five, 19-14.

Fayetteville State evened the score at 19-all before Jada Lee connected from the stripe to give the Hawks a 21-19 advantage at the end of the quarter.

Second Quarter:

The Hawks went on a 10-4 run to start the quarter to stretch the lead to 31-23.  Jordan Pettaway and Jada Lee started the run with a pair of baskets.  Joanne Williams posted a jumper along with a Pettaway triple to finish off the run.

After a three point swing by the Broncos, Jordan Pettaway gave the Hawks four points before FSU trimmed the lead to 35-29.

With time running down, Olivia Gaither pulled up from near mid-court and banked in a three-pointer to send the Hawks into the locker room up 38-29.

Third Quarter:

Chowan continued to dominate the contest with a 7-2 run out of halftime.  Jada Lee started the run following two free throws by the Broncos.  Olivia Gaither converted the fastbreak layup and Danielle Weldon finished off her own miss to force a timeout.

Joanne Williams kept the Hawks' lead in double-digits with a jumper, 47-35.  Williams added a freebie and Jordan Pettway knocked down a jumper in the paint to give the Hawks a 17 point advantage, 52-35.

Fourth Quarter:

Back-to-back buckets by Danielle Weldon allowed the offense to keep rolling.  Joanne Williams and Weldon's buckets kept the lead sizable, 60-42, midway through the final stanza.

Buckets by Destiny Robinson and Kaylah Henderson gave the Hawks a 20-point lead.  Brianna Copeland knocked down a corner trey before the Hawks went 3-4 from the stripe to finish off the 72-47 victory.

Chowan hosts Shaw in a CIAA cross-divisional contest on Saturday, December 15.  Tip-off is scheduled for 2pm.
