Slow Start Hinders Hawks In Low-Scoring Affair

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team was unable to overcome the slow start as the Hawks dropped a 61-49 decision at home against Lenoir-Rhyne.

Jada Lee led the Hawks with 13 points.  Mariah Coker chipped in with 10 points, six rebounds and four steals.

Danielle Weldon missed a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds.

The Hawks went 3-17 (17.6%) from behind the arch and turned the ball over 22 times.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Both teams were unable to hit from the floor early as Jada Lee netted the first basket from the floor at the 7:02 mark.

Lenoir-Rhyne would double up the Hawks 10-5 midway through the half with Mariah Coker connecting from deep during the stretch.

Jordan Pettaway hit a jumper and Danielle Weldon went 1-2 from the stripe to cut the deficit to 10-8.

Over the final 1:36 of the quarter, the Bears went on an 8-0 to lead 18-8.

Second Quarter:

Jada Lee knocked down a triple in transition to spark a 9-2 run to trim the deficit to 20-17.  Danielle Weldon and Lee posted another bucket during the stretch.

Kaylah Henderson would convert with a jumper in the paint with 4:32 remaining in the half before both teams went cold.  Henderson went 2-2 from the stripe before LR knocked down a three-pointer with 32 seconds left.

Danielle Weldon hit a jumper to close out the half to trim the deficit to 28-25.

Third Quarter:

Joanne Williams gave the Hawks their first lead of the contest at 29-28 with a jumper following two freebies by Jada Lee.

The Bears would knock down a three-pointer midway through the quarter to regain the lead and never give it back.

Jahkeria Bagby and Danielle Weldon would tie the score before Lenoir-Rhyne went on a 10-2 run to close the quarter,45-37.  Kaylah Henderson recorded the lone tally for the Hawks.

Fourth Quarter:

Kaylah Henderson started the scoring in the quarter with an old-fashioned three-point play.  Jada Lee scored four points to trim the deficit to five, 49-44, midway through the quarter but the Bears would answer at the other end.

Mariah Coker knocked down a triple for the final bucket for the Hawks as the Bears extended their lead from the stripe to salt away the win.

UP NEXT

Chowan travels to Florence, S.C. to face Francis Marion in a non-conference game on Monday, November 19.  Tip-off is slated for 6pm.
