Five Hawks In Double-Figures To Pull Away From MACU

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Men's Basketball team pulled away from Mid-Atlantic Christian late as the Hawks defeated the Mustangs 87-59 at home on Thursday evening.

Five players were in double-figures for the Hawks led by Ja'Darien Wade with 23 points on 10-13 shooting.  Demetrius Sanders tallied 20 points and nine rebounds.

Michael Kelly recorded his first double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds.  Gus Rowland netted 12 points, while Timothy Bing posted 11 points and seven assists.

The Hawks shot 63.3% from the floor in the second half and held the Mustangs to 27.0% in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Chowan started slow grabbing a bucket 35 seconds into the contest by Ja'Darien Wade but would not convert from the floor until Wade hit a three at the 16:31 mark.  Demetrius Sanders went 2-2 from the stripe.  Wade knocked down a jumper in transition to give the Hawks a 9-6 lead early.

Timothy Bing went on a 5-0 run by himself from the stripe and behind the arc.  Gus Rowland knocked down a transition bucket to double-up the Mustangs 16-8.

Leading 22-18, the Hawks went on an 8-2 run to lead 30-20 with 6:11 left in the half.  Gus Rowland sparked the run with a jumper followed by a basket by Demetrius Sanders, Ugljesa Portic and Ja'Darien Wade.

The Hawks stretched the lead to 19, 40-21, over the next three minutes as Michael Kelly scored eight of the ten points during the stretch.

MACU finished off the half with a 7-0 run to trail 40-28 at intermission.

Second Half:

Chowan and MACU traded buckets early with Demetrius Sanders putting down two dunks on passes from Ja'Darien Wade.

The Mustangs cut into the deficit to narrow the gap to single digits, 55-47, before Timothy Bing and Michael Kelly put the lead back to 12, 59-47.

A quick 12-2 run with Gus Rowland with eight points ballooned the lead before the Hawks seized control.  Michael Kelly gave the Hawks their largest lead of the contest with a jumper at 22, 74-52 with 4:13 remaining.

Robert Grubbs knocked down a three-pointer and Xavier Young converted from the stripe to keep the CU lead at 28 to finish off the contest.

UP NEXT

Chowan hosts Regent in a non-conference contest on Monday, November 19.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm.
