MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Men's Basketball started off the season with an 86-66 victory over Piedmont International on Monday evening inside the Helms Center.

Ja'Darien Wade led the Hawks with 24 points on 10-16 shooting from the floor.  Wade added seven rebounds and two blocks.
Timothy Bing chipped in with 19 points, six rebounds, and five assists.  Demetrius Sanders recorded 16 points, three blocks and three steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
Piedmont International would start fast jumping out to an 8-4 lead.  Robert Grubbs and Gus Rowland tallied baskets early for the Hawks.  Chowan would go on a 9-0 run sparked by back-to-back buckets by Ja'Darien Wade.  Demetrius Sanders tallied a fast break dunk and was capped off by a Timothy Bing triple to lead 13-8.
The two teams traded three-pointers before the Hawks started to pull away.  Ja'Darien Wade started the run with a jumper followed by a jumper by Timothy Bing and a triple by Robert Grubbs to give the Hawks a double-digit lead, 23-13.  Two buckets by Demetrius Sanders extended the lead to 27-13 before the Bruins tallied a basket before the media timeout.
Demetrius Sanders would knock down a triple from the wing and record another dunk to keep the momentum with the Hawks.  Six straight points by Ja'Darien Wade and a bucket by Sanders gave the Hawks a 45-21 advantage with three minutes left in the half.
The Bruins would trim the deficit slightly with a 6-0 run but Demetrius Sanders knocked down a three to keep the lead sizeable.  Gus Rowland converted from the stripe with 0.2 left on the clock to send the Hawks into the locker room with a 50-28 lead.
Second Half:
Four points early by Ja'Darien Wade started the offense before the Bruins started chipping away closing the gap to 54-36.  Michael Kelly tallied a bucket to end the drought for the Hawks.
The teams would trade baskets midway through the half with the Hawks maintaining their 20 point advantage.  A bucket by Ja'Darien Wade and a jumper by Robert Grubbs gave the Hawks their largest lead of the contest of 26 points, 73-47, with 10:11 remaining.
Michael Kelly and Timothy Bing would keep the lead at 26 with a pair of baskets.  The Bruins would cut the deficit to 19, 83-64, before Xavier Young knocked down a triple with under a minute to play.
