INSTITUTE, W.VA – Jada Lee broke the career record for assists with seven as the Chowan Women's Basketball team earned their first win of the season with a non-conference win against West Virginia State on the road on Sunday afternoon.

Five players recorded double-figure scoring outputs and two with double-doubles. Danielle Weldon posted a team-high 18 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. Weldon's rebound total is second most in a single game.
Joanne Williams tallied 12 points and 12 rebounds. Jada Lee posted 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Lee recorded her career leading 292 assists breaking former CU standout, Najah Harris' record of 290 assists.
Jordan Pettway and Kaylah Henderson posted 12 points and 10 points respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
Chowan started slow trailing 6-3 early. Mariah Coker knocked down a three during the sputter. Dierra Carter tallied a bucket to trim the deficit to 8-5.
Buckets by Jordan Pettaway and Joanne Williams continued the scoring for the Hawks. WVSU pushed their lead to 16-9 before a Destiny Robinson layup and a pair from Mariah Coker at the line trimmed the deficit to 18-13 at the end of the opening stanza.
Second Quarter:
Danielle Weldon and Jade Lee trimmed the lead to one, 18-17 before the Yellow Jackets knocked down back-to-back triples to push the lead back to seven.
A quick 7-0 run by the Hawks sparked by Danielle Weldon with four points and a trey by Kaylah Henderson closed the deficit to 27-26 with 6:10 left in the half.
Back-to-back buckets by Danielle Weldon evened the score at 31-all midway through the quarter before Jada Lee and Danielle Weldon's buckets gave the Hawks the lead.
Five points by Jordan Pettaway on a three-pointer and a layup gave the Hawks a 40-34 advantage to force a timeout.
Chowan led 40-37 heading into the locker room.
Third Quarter:
A 7-2 run to open the half gave the Yellow Jackets a slim 44-42 lead before Jahkeria Bagby converted a layup. Jordan Pettaway traded a triple to keep the score level.
Mariah Coker and Kaylah Henderson knocked down triples and a layup by Joanne Williams pushed the Hawks to a 60-51 lead.
Jada Lee gave the Hawks a double-figure lead, 62-52, heading to the final stanza.
Fourth Quarter:
Jada Lee knocked down a triple to start the scoring for the Hawks before a 7-0 run by WVSU trimmed the deficit to 66-60.
The Yellow Jackets continued to chip away at the deficit to 68-64 midway through the quarter before Kaylah Henderson and Joanne Williams tallied a pair of layups.
Jordan Pettaway and Joanne Williams notched buckets to push the advantage to double-figures, 78-67, with 1:36 remaining.
Danielle Weldon tallied the final basket to finish the contest.
