INSTITUTE, W.VA. – The fast start faded as the Chowan Women's Basketball team fell in the season opener to nationally-ranked Glenville State in a neutral site contest 98-72.

Danielle Weldon posted her first double-double of the season with a career-high 25 points and 13 rebounds.

Joanne Williams and Mariah Coker notched double figures with 13 and 12 points respectively.  Williams posted nine rebounds.

Jada Lee tallied six assists to sit with 285 career assists, five away from the career record.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Glenville State led 4-0 early before Jada Lee and Danielle Weldon put the Hawks on the scoreboard.  Joanne Williams swapped baskets with the Lady Pioneers before Mariah Coker's triple put Chowan up 9-8.

A bucket by Destiny Robinson and Danielle Weldon continued the slim lead for the Hawks.  Jordan Pettaway tallied a basket with 3:59 remaining in the quarter to keep the Hawks on top 18-16.

Chowan led 22-18 with baskets by Jada Lee and Danielle Weldon.  Following a layup by Joanne Williams, Glenville State finished the quarter on an 11-0 run to lead 37-26.

Second Quarter:

Jordan Pettaway knocked down a triple to start the scoring for Chowan.  Mariah Coker and Danielle Weldon trimmed the deficit to 42-33 with 7:21 with a pair of buckets.

Glenville State stretched their lead to 56-40 at the halftime buzzer.

Third Quarter:

Glenville State took advantage of the slow start out of the locker room to stretch their lead to 32, 75-43, going on a 19-3 run.  Danielle Weldon ended the run with a bucket in the paint.  Mariah Coker knocked down a three followed by a bucket by Kaylah Henderson.

Jada Lee tallied three points down the stretch of the quarter to trail 81-55.

Fourth Quarter:

Destiny Robinson converted from the charity stripe along with a bucket by Danielle Weldon on a pass from Jada Lee to cut into the deficit.

Danielle Weldon and Mariah Coker notched a bucket along with two free throws by Joanne Williams to trim the deficit to 89-65 midway through the quarter.

Glenville State would keep the lead manageable to the final buzzer.

UP NEXT

Chowan returns to the court on Saturday, November 11 as the Hawks take on host, West Virginia State, in the final contest of the Conference Challenge.  Tip-off is slated for 3:30pm.
