ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team moved to 2-0 in the CIAA Northern Division with a straight sets victory over Elizabeth City State on Thursday evening.

Kayla Gates paced the Hawks with 11 kills and 11 digs on the evening. Milica Vejnovic and Courtney O'Keefe notched seven kills each.
Sydney Hiner led the charge with 19 digs. Alyssa Born posted 16 digs. Breona Young notched six total blocks with five solos.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set:
Both teams traded points early in the set until two kills by Milica Vejnovic and a block by Breona Young gave the Hawks a 9-5 lead.
Elizabeth City State closed the gap to 12-10 but back-to-back kills by Kayla Gates allowed the Hawks to push ahead 14-10.
The Vikings rallied back to close the gap to 19-17 before a kill by Sydney Hiner and two errors by the Vikings put the Hawks ahead 22-17.
Kayla Gates finished off the set with two kills, 25-21.
Second Set:
After a close battle to open the set the Hawks would pull away after Kayla Gates sparked the run with a kill leading 16-12. Courtney O'Keefe recorded a kill before back-to-back service aces by Sydney Hiner. The run continued with a kill by O'Keefe and Hiner to push the lead to 21-12.
ECSU grabbed a couple points until Breona Young finished off the set with a kill, 25-15.
Third Set:
Breona Young and Courtney O'Keefe started the set off for the Hawks with an 8-2 lead.
Courtney O'Keefe coupled with Vikings errors and a Breona Young block pushed the lead to 11-4.
ECSU fought back to trim the deficit to 16-14 before Sydney Hiner notched a service ace and a kill by Courtney O'Keefe moved the score to 19-14.
Once again, ECSU closed the gap to 22-20 and again 24-23. Kayla Gates slammed down the final kill to take the set and match.
