Chowan Tripped Up By Trojans At Home

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team saw their quest for the CIAA Northern Division title come to a close as the Hawks dropped a divisional match to Virginia State on Monday evening.

Micayla Pope registered her 12th double-double of the season with 18 assists and 22 digs.

Milica Vejnovic tallied a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs.  Sydney Hiner and Alyssa Born posted double-digit digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set:

After Virginia State led 6-3, Chowan clawed back to tie the set at 6-all as the Hawks were given points on errors and a block by Courtney O'Keefe.

VSU would widen the gap to 17-11 before closing the gap to 19-17.  Courtney O'Keefe started the rally with a kill before two kills by Milica Vejnovic ended the rally.

The Trojans would take the opening set, 25-18.

Second Set:

The second set bounced back and forth with both teams swapping points.

Late in the set, Sydney Hiner and Courtney O'Keefe notched kills before Milica Vejnovic tallied a kill to give the Hawks a 23-22 lead.

Courtney O'Keefe and Breona Young posted a kill to take the set 26-24 to even the match at 1-all.

Third Set:

The Hawks would play close as Milica Vejnovic closed the gap to 8-6 and 10-7 with a pair of kills.

Following the kill, VSU pushed their lead to 20-10 forcing a Chowan timeout.  The Trojans would take the set 25-11.

Fourth Set:

Milica Vejnovic, Micayla Pope, and Sydney Hiner tallied kills early in the set to lead 7-6.

An 11-1 run after a service error allowed Virginia State to double up the Hawks 22-11 and force a timeout.

Milica Vejnovic tallied the final kill for the Hawks as Virginia State took the set and match 25-13.

UP NEXT

Chowan takes a step out of conference play as the Hawks travel to Mount Olive on Tuesday, October 30.  First serve is at 6pm.
