Cold Shooting Dooms Hawks MBB Against Livingstone

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Men's Basketball team was unable to keep pace with the visiting Livingstone Blue Bears in CIAA action on Monday evening as the Hawks fell 74-61 at home.

Three Hawks eclipsed double-figure scoring as Gus Rowland and Robert Grubbs netted 14 points each.  Dino Muminovic chipped in with 11 points.  Muminovic added seven rebounds and six blocks.  The senior transfer is now the single-season record holder for blocks in a season with 43.

Gus Rowland added five assists and five rebounds in the contest.  Robert Grubbs hauled in a team-high seven boards.

The Hawks shot a season low 28.6% (8-28) in the first half but only trailed by three at the break.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

The Hawks saw the first three points of the contest go their way going 3-4 from the charity stripe.  Robert Grubbs notched the first bucket for the Hawks to give them a slight 5-4 lead.

Chowan's offense went cold over the next 6:32 as Livingstone would push ahead 18-9.  Demetrius Sanders, Gus Rowland and Trevis Buckhanon tallied a bucket to close the gap.

The Blue Bears widened the margin to 21-13 with 7:49 left in the opening half before Gus Rowland sparked an 8-0 run to knot the contest up at 21-all.  Rowland added another jumper followed by a Trevis Buckhanon jumper ended the run.

Demetrius Sanders would give the Hawks a 25-23 lead with four straight points.  Two triples by Livingstone allowed the Blue Bears to take a 29-26 lead at the break.

Second Half:

Chowan continued to chip away at the deficit trading baskets in the opening portion of the second half.  Gus Rowland, Tim Hewett, Robert Grubbs, and Dino Muminovic chipped in with four points each to keep the deficit manageable down 44-42.

Livingstone went on a 12-0 run to put the contest out of reach knocking down a pair of treys on back-to-back possessions to spark the run.  Tim Hewett ended the run with a layup at the 10:19 mark.

The Hawks were unable to get the deficit back into single digits down the stretch as Livingstone matched the Hawks handing Chowan a 74-61 home loss.

UP NEXT

Chowan travels to cross-town rival, Elizabeth City State, on Saturday, January 13 for a CIAA Northern Division match up.  Tip-off is slated for 4pm.
