MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team was dealt their second straight loss and first loss in CIAA play as the Rams of Winston-Salem State took down the Hawks 101-96 in overtime on Saturday afternoon.

Chantel Roberts and Dhyamond Crenshaw tallied 54 combined points for the Hawks with Roberts scoring 28 points to go with 12 rebounds.
Mariah Coker set a new school record with 11 assists in her first double-double of her career adding 12 points to the mix. Danielle Weldon (15) and Jada Lee (10) reached double-figures scoring marks.
Winston-Salem State duo of Kandace Tate and Brionna Pate combined for 66 points and 20 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
Chowan was unable to get a shot to drop in the early portion of the contest as WSSU jumped out to an early 8-0 lead. Chantel Roberts broke the seal on the Hawks' basket with a jumper. Danielle Weldon continued the attack with an old-fashioned three-point play.
The Hawks would continue to cut away at the deficit as Jada Lee, Danielle Weldon and Chantel Roberts notched baskets to cut the deficit to 12-11 with 2:31 remaining in the quarter.
The Rams widened the gap to 19-13 to end the quarter as Mariah Coker scored the lone basket down the stretch.
Second Quarter:
The Rams continued to attack seeing their advantage swell to double-figures, 23-13, just 1:08 into the second stanza. Chowan would go on a 7-2 run sparked by Chantel Roberts' long distance connection to trim the deficit to five, 25-20.
Chantel Roberts drained another trey along with two baskets by Jada Lee kept the contest within two points, 34-32.
The Hawks and Rams continued to trade baskets until half time as Winston-Salem took a 42-40 advantage into the locker room.
Third Quarter:
WSSU came out firing in the third quarter on a 15-6 run, giving the Rams a double-digit lead once again, 57-46, midway through the quarter. Joanne Williams and Dhyamond Crenshaw contributed to the scoring for the Hawks.
Chowan responded with a 16-3 run of their own to grab their first lead of the contest, 62-60, with just over a minute to play in the quarter. Danielle Weldon sparked the rally with a trey. Dhyamond Crenshaw added eight points in the run including a three-point play. Mariah Coker knotted the contest up with a jumper in the paint followed by Weldon's jumper at the elbow to put the Hawks on top.
The Rams countered with a 6-0 run to end the quarter to lead 66-62 heading to the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter:
The quarter started with both teams trading baskets as Dhyamond Crenshaw connected on a layup and Mariah Coker hitting from behind the arc. Danielle Weldon and Chantel Roberts gave the Hawks a 73-72 lead knocking down a pair from deep.
Six points by Chantel Roberts kept the Hawks in front as the lead continued to change hands in the one possession battle. Mariah Coker's triple gave the Hawks an 88-84 lead with 1:28 remaining in regulation.
WSSU knotted things up at 88-all with nine ticks left. Mariah Coker had a look at the basket as time expired but was unable to get it to drop.
Overtime:
Both teams converted from the charity stripe and the floor early as the score remained tied 93-all with 2:17 left in overtime.
WSSU gained the advantage with a jumper and a pair from the stripe to lead 97-93 with 1:04 left. Following an administrative technical Dhyamond Crenshaw brought the Hawks to within one, 97-96, connecting on 3-4 from the charity stripe.
The Rams put the game on ice with a bucket and a pair of freebies to upend the Hawks 101-96.

Chowan will continue cross-divisional play in the CIAA with a home contest against Livingstone on Monday, January 8. Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm.
