Hawks MBB Snap Skid With Win Over Rams

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Men's Basketball team snapped a seven game skid, as the Hawks used a balanced scoring attack to down Winston-Salem State, 82-65, in cross-divisional play in CIAA action on Saturday evening.

Four players reached double-figures for the Hawks, led by Demetrius Sanders scoring 19 points on 7-11 shooting from the floor.  Gus Rowland chipped in with 18 along with Tim Hewett (16) and Robert Grubbs (12).

Dino Muminovic tallied eight points, nine boards, and five blocks on the evening.  Muminovic is three blocks shy of the single-season record with 37 blocks so far this season.

The Hawks outrebounded the Rams 42-29 and held the Rams to 36.1% shooting as Chowan shot 45.6% from the floor.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Tim Hewett sparked the offense early with nine of the Hawks' 12 points in a 12-7 lead.  Demetrius Sanders connected from deep on his first shot attempt of the evening.

Winston-Salem State rallied on a 10-0 run to take the lead 17-12 midway through the half.

Demetrius Sanders cooled off the Rams' run with another long ball before baskets by Tim Hewett and Gus Rowland knotted the contest up at 19-all.

Both teams traded the lead until a 12-4 run to end the half allowed the Hawks to take the momentum.  The first five points for the Hawks came from the stripe before Robert Grubbs connected from outside.  Dino Muminovic and Gus Rowland tacked on a bucket to head into the locker room up 35-29.

Second Half:

Neither team was able to see the ball go through the net the first three minutes of the half until the Rams hit a triple with 16:49 on the clock.

Chowan saw their lead move to double-figures over the next four minutes of action as the Hawks went on a 16-7 run.  Dino Muminovic started the run with a jumper followed by a Demetrius Sanders basket.  Robert Grubbs and Demetrius Sanders connected from behind the arc along with Gus Rowland knocking down a pair from the floor to give the Hawks a 51-39 advantage with 12:02 to play.

Winston-Salem State knocked down a pair from behind the arc but Trevis Buckhanon gave the Hawks the double-digit lead for good with a two handed dunk.  The Hawks continued to keep the Rams down with an 8-2 run as Demetrius Sanders found himself above the rim for a dunk.

WSSU looked to cut the deficit to single-digits but Tim Hewett sparked a 6-0 run with a dunk to push the lead to 18, 71-53.

The final 2:25 of the contest, the Hawks went 11-12 from the stripe as Gus Rowland picked up seven points down the stretch.

UP NEXT

Chowan will return to the court on Monday, January 8 against Livingstone in CIAA cross-divisional play.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm inside the Helms Center.
