FLORENCE, S.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team battled against UNC Pembroke and Francis Marion but ultimately fell 3-2 and 3-0 respectively in the only day of Francis Marion Invitational on Friday afternoon.

In her first action this season, Makayla Castro posted a double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs. Castro finished the tournament with 18 kills and 28 digs.
Karisa Patterson also posted a double-double in the first match with 37 assists and 17 digs. Patterson added 15 assists and six digs in the nightcap.
Brittany Tschida posted 10 kills and three service aces in the match against UNC Pembroke. Bailey Zavala tallied 47 digs in the two matches.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Chowan 2, UNC Pembroke 3
1st Set (Chowan 20, UNC Pembroke 25)
The contest opened with an early 7-3 lead by the Braves. Chowan would fight back to bring the set within two, 12-10. The Hawks received kills by six different players to go on the run.
UNCP pushed their advantage to 22-13 forcing a two Chowan timeouts. Brittany Tschida ended the run with a kill. Sydney Bell followed Tschida with a kill before Tschida served up back-to-back aces to bring the Hawks to within four, 22-18.
Karisa Patterson served up an ace for the final point for the Hawks before the Braves took the set 25-20.
2nd Set (Chowan 25, UNC Pembroke 18)
Chowan rallied in the second set to hit a season-high .297 in the set. The Hawks posted 14 kills and three errors in the set to take the set win.
The Hawks and Braves battled back-and-forth through the set taking an 11-7 lead after a Makayla Castro kill. Karisa Patterson extended the Hawk lead to 19-12 on a kill before UNCP attempted a rally. The Braves cut into the deficit 21-18 on a service error but Karisa Patterson served the final three points for the Hawks. Kayla Gates finished the set with a kill.
3rd Set (Chowan 14, UNC Pembroke 25)
The Hawks picked up five kills in the set as the Braves used the miscues to build a 16-7 lead. Makayla Castro recorded two kills in the set.
4th Set (Chowan 25, UNC Pembroke 23)
Chowan bounced back in the fourth set two record 12 kills to force a decisive fifth set. Six straight Braves error allowed the Hawks to maintain a comfortable 14-6 lead.
Courtney O'Keefe and Makayla Castro gave the Hawks a 20-11 advantage. UNC Pembroke clawed their way back into the set going on a 12-3 run to knot things up at 23-all. Cheryl Thomas registered a kill before Brittany Tschida ended the set with a service ace.
5th Set (Chowan 13, UNC Pembroke 15)
UNC Pembroke jumped out to an early 6-3 lead before Chowan responded with a 5-0 run to take an 8-6 lead at the switch. Brittany Tschida recorded the lone kill during the run.
The Braves knotted things up at 10, 11, 12, and 13-all. UNC Pembroke would escape with a 15-13 set victory.
Chowan 0, Francis Marion 3
1st Set (Chowan 20, Francis Marion 25)
Both sides battled back-and-forth through the first set with neither team gaining more than a three point advantage.
The Hawks would grab the advantage at 15-13 after a Courtney O'Keefe kill that forced a Francis Marion timeout. Brittany Tschida gave the Hawks a 19-18 lead before FMU scored five straight points forcing a Chowan timeout.
The Patriots would find the final two points in the set to take the early 1-0 set lead, 25-20.
2nd Set (Chowan 19, Francis Marion 25)
Once again the Hawks and Patriots battled through most of the set. Karisa Patterson knotted the contest at 10-all with a kill. FMU used a four point rally to take the advantage, 14-10. Alyssa Born would close the gap with a kill to bring the deficit to 17-15 in favor of FMU.
Another four point swing for the Patriots forced a Chowan timeout trailing 21-15. Brittany Tschida added a kill followed by a service ace by Karisa Patterson for the final points for the Hawks in the set as Francis Marion took the set 25-19.
3rd Set (Chowan 22, Francis Marion 25)
Chowan battled through the early portion of the set to lead 15-10 after a Makayla Castro kill. Francis Marion rallied back to knot things at 16-all before a service ace by Brittany Tschida and a kill by Cheryl Thomas pushed the lead to 19-16.
The Patriots tied the set at 21-all and 22-all forcing a Chowan timeout. Two Patriot kills and a Hawk miscue ended the set and match.
UP NEXT
Chowan will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to compete in the CIAA Volleyball Round Up on September 16-17 hosted by Winston-Salem State. The Hawks will face St. Augustine's and Winston-Salem State on opening day followed by Shaw on Sunday.
