CU Volleyball Split CIAA Round-Up On Day One

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team split the opening day of the CIAA Round-Up hosted by Winston-Salem State on Saturday picking up the win against St. Augustine's and falling in the nightcap to host Winston-Salem State.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Kayla Gates led the Hawks with 15 kills.  Brittany Tschida and Cheryl Thomas tallied 11 and 10 kills respectively.

Karisa Patterson dished out 56 assists, 12 service aces and 10 digs.  Bailey Zavala recorded 35 digs on the afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Chowan 3, St. Augustine's 0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-11)

1st Set: Chowan 25, St. Augustine's 20

Both teams battled for position in the early portion of the set.  Chowan led 6-3 thanks to three straight Falcon errors.

Chowan extended their lead to 14-10 on a Karisa Patterson service ace.  The Hawks would maintain the lead as the Falcons never got to within two points of the lead the rest of the set.

Karisa Patterson ended the set with a service ace to give the Hawks a 25-20 set victory.

2nd Set: Chowan 25, St. Augustine's 20

The Hawks jumped out to an early 7-2 lead.  Courtney O'Keefe fueled the rally with two kills.

St. Augustine's rallied back to knot things at 8-all after a Falcon block.  A kill by Brittany Tschida gave the Hawks the lead but SAU clawed back into the match to take the lead at 18-17.

Makayla Castro recorded a kill to tie things at 18-all followed by a block by Karisa Patterson and Brittany Tschida to give the Hawks the advantage and never relinquished the lead in the set.

Brittany Tschida registered a kill as the set ended with a kill by Cheryl Thomas.

3rd Set: Chowan 25, St. Augustine's 11

Chowan soared out to a 13-4 advantage to open the set.  Sydney Bell put down three kills and Kayla Gates tallied two kills during the run.

The Falcons cut their deficit in half on a kill and a service ace before the Hawks extended their lead to 21-10 to put the match out of reach.  Courtney O'Keefe and Sydney Bell tallied two kills each during the spurt.

Kayla Gates and Sydney Bell ended the match for the Hawks with a pair of kills to take the set 25-11 and the match 3-0.

Chowan 0, Winston-Salem State 3 (17-25, 18-25, 23-25)

1st Set: Chowan 17, Winston-Salem 25

Chowan led through the early portion of the set with an 8-6 lead forcing an early WSSU timeout.  The Hawks widened their early lead on a kill by Kayla Gates and Karisa Patterson.

WSSU tallied three straight kills to force a Chowan timeout at 12-11 in favor of the Hawks.  Coming out of the timeout, the Rams used the Hawks' miscues to take the lead and run away with the set as the Hawks were forced to call their second timeout trailing 20-12.

The Rams would take the first set 25-17 as both teams swapped points to end the set.

2nd Set: Chowan 18, Winston-Salem 25

Both teams were unable to grab separation in the set as the score was tied at 12, 16, 17, and 18-all.

Winston-Salem used five Hawks' miscues to take the advantage and set 25-18.

3rd Set: Chowan 23, Winston-Salem 25

Chowan used a kill by Karisa Patterson and two service aces by Patterson to take a 3-2 lead early.  The Hawks continued their lead to 10-6 before the Rams knotted the score up at 11-all, 12-all, and 13-all.

With the score tied at 13, the Rams rattled off six points to add cushion in the set.  The Hawks cut their deficit to 21-20 and gained the lead at 22-21.  Three kills by the Hawks and three Rams errors provide the run.

The Rams use a Hawk miscue and a service ace to take the lead back at 24-22.  Sydney Bell closes the gap with a kill but unable to bring the Hawks back in the set as Chowan falls 25-23 in the set and 3-0 in the match

UP NEXT

Chowan returns to the court on Sunday, September 17 against defending CIAA Champion, Shaw, at 11am in the final match of the round-up for the Hawks.
