Hawks Volleyball Out Hit By Barton At Home

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Chowan Volleyball team dropped their home opener against the visiting Barton Bulldogs on Tuesday evening in straight sets, 3-0.  The Hawks return home on September 24 and 25 to face Bowie State and Lincoln in CIAA Northern Division action.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE 
Brittany Tschida led the offensive attack with eight kills and no errors.  Tschida added four assisted blocks on the evening.
Karisa Patterson posted the first double-double of the season with 18 assists and 10 digs.
Milica Vejnovic, Sydney Bell, and Courtney O'Keefe chipped in with four kills each.  Vejnovic added 10 digs.
Libero, Bailey Zavala posted a team-high 12 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
1st Set: Chowan 13, Barton 25
Chowan fell behind in the early portion of the set as Barton jumped out to an early 12-3 advantage.  Sydney Bell recorded two kills for the Hawks.  Brittany Tschida gave the Hawks life with three straight kills to cut into the deficit 13-9.  The Hawks would cut into the Bulldog lead at 15-12 thanks to a block by Milica Vejnovic and Sydney Bell.  Barton would use three Hawks' miscues to pad their lead to 19-12.  Sydney Bell recorded the final point in the set for the Hawks with a kill as the Bulldogs finished the set on a 6-0 advantage.

2nd Set: Chowan 21, Barton 25
The Hawks grabbed the early advantage behind the play of Brittany Tschida.  Tschida and the Hawks trailed 3-1 before the spurt to take an 8-3 lead.  Kayla Gates started the rally with a kill.  Tschida along with Gates and Courtney O'Keefe registered assisted blocks to give the Hawks a 4-3 lead.  Tschida registered back-to-back kills before O'Keefe ended the spark.
Barton would counter with a 10-2 run to regain the lead at 13-11.  Chowan used an Alyssa Born kill and four Bulldog miscues to force a Barton timeout, 17-13.  Karisa Patterson capped off the rally with a service ace out of the timeout.
The Bulldogs would not turn away scoring five straight points to take the lead 18-17.  Barton ended the set on a 7-4 run to take a 2-0 set advantage.

3rd Set: Chowan 16, Barton 25
Chowan and Barton battled through the first portion of the set with the Bulldogs grabbing the slight advantage,10-9.  The Bulldogs would start to pull away in the set extending their lead to 15-10 on the part of three Hawks' errors.  Chowan would cut it to 18-14 and would receive kills by Karisa Patterson and Milica Vejnovic but the Bulldogs would take the set and the match.

UP NEXT
Chowan travels to Florence, S.C. to compete in a two-day tournament hosted by Francis Marion on September 8-9.  The Hawks will face UNC-Pembroke and host Francis Marion on Friday, September 8 and take on Belmont Abbey and Converse on the final day of action.
