Hawks Pick Up Two CIAA Wins in Opening Day of CIAA Round Up

Katrina Simmons collected 4 hits in Friday's CIAA wins over WSSU & JCSU
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHARLOTTE, NC - The Chowan University softball team picked up two key CIAA wins in opening day play of the CIAA Round Up hosted by Johnson C. Smith University. Shelby Griffis tripled in the bottom of the 7th inning to help lift her team over CIAA rival, Winston-Salem State University, 4-3 to open the round up. The team went on to roll to a 8-0 win over Johnson C. Smith in their second game of the day and their second CIAA win of the year. 

The Hawks improved to 17-13 after Friday's games. 

Chowan faced off against Winston-Salem State to open the round up. The Hawks used a triple by Shelby Griffis to bust a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the 7th inning for a 4-3 win. Chowan got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. Danielle Baccus led the inning off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch. The wild pitch put Tina White on second base. White was driven in on a Brittany Parson single for a 2-0 lead. WSSU's Merceds Hargett tied the game with a two run shot in the next at-bat. 

CU's Kris Neal scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 5th inning to get a 3-2 lead. The Rams tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the 6th inning. Brittany Parson singled to lead the bottom of the 7th inning off. With one out, Griffis came in to pinch hit. Her triple scored Parson and secure the 4-3 win. 

Parson and Katrina Simmons finished the game 2-3. Simmons also tallied two stolen bases. Shannon Buchanan got the win on the mound. She threw a complete game, gave up 11 hits and struck out six Rams for her 4th win of the season. 

Chowan rolled to a 8-0 win over Johnson C. Smith University in the second game of the day. The Hawks scored five runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning off of four hits to help propel them to the shut out win. Kayla Robins picked up her 13th win of the season on the mound. She struck out seven batters and gave up two hits.

The Hawks pounded out 10 hits in the game. Neal ended game with 1-2 with three RBI and Simmons collected two hits in three at-bats.

Chowan will continue play at the CIAA Round Up Saturday, March 18th with games against Fayetteville State (11:00am) and Shaw University (3:00pm). Games are being played in Charlotte at Nevin Community Park.
