Box Score 2 MOUNT OLIVE, NC- The Chowan University softball team split a pair of games against the University of Mount Olive on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks move to 2-6 on the year while the Trojans post a 3-3 record on the young season.
Chowan grabbed a 3-0 win in the opening game and dropped a 6-5 decision to the Trojans in the nightcap.
After four scoreless innings of play in the opening game,
Tina White's RBI double allowed
Katrina Simmons to score in the top of the fifth. Holding a 1-0 advantage, a two-run single by
Brittany Parson in the top of the seventh pushed Chowan ahead 3-0.
Kayla Robins struck out the side in the bottom of the frame to secure the victory for the Hawks.
Robins held the Trojans hitless in the contest while striking out 10 batters over seven innings of work.
Haley Cooper paced the Hawks at the plate with two hits while Parson,
Kris Neal, and White each recorded one hit in the win.
Karen Foley took the loss for Mount Olive after surrendering two hits and one earned run over the course of 4.2 innings. Kylie Ward entered the contest in-relief, allowing two runs off of three hits.
In the nightcap, Parson's two-run single and
Danielle Baccus' sacrifice fly gave Chowan a 3-0 advantage after the Hawks' first at-bat.
Brook Bowen's RBI single to left and
Lindsey Stigler's sacrifice fly in the third gave the Hawks two additional runs, resulting in a 5-0 lead. Mount Olive answered with one run in the home half of the frame using JenniBeth Burge's infield single and tacked on an additional run in the fourth after a bases-loaded walk.
Mount Olive struck again in the sixth, plating two runs on a Chowan fielding error and wild pitch. The Hawks held a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, but late heroics by the Trojans allowed Mount Olive to secure the win. With two outs, Eileen Barrera laced an RBI single up the middle to knot the score 5-5. Callie Ferrell's RBI double to centerfield secured the 6-5 win for Mount Olive.
Shannon Buchanan surrendered two earned runs off of three hits over the course of 3.2 innings of work.
Audrey Hubbard entered the game in-relief and was charged with the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) off of eight hits.
Emily Chaisson recorded the win on the mound for Mount Olive. She kept the Hawks off of the scoreboard in the final 4.2 innings and surrendered just three hits.
Cooper led the effort for the Hawks at the plate with three hits. Parson added two hits while knocking in two RBI while White recorded two hits in the loss.
Barrera tallied three hits for Mount Olive while Burge, Ferrell, and Kayla Allen each notched two hits apiece.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday when the team travels to take on Coker College. First pitch for the doubleheader match-up is slated for 1pm.
