Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC - Virginia State University used a second half surge to help rally them past Chowan University in CIAA Northern Division action on Wednesday night. The Trojans downed the Hawks 62-56 to improve to 19-4 on the year. Chowan fell to 16-7 overall and 8-5 in the CIAA.
Chowan took a 33-27 lead into the halftime break after shooting 43% (12-28) from the floor. Virginia State came out to play in the second half, chipping away at the Hawks lead. At the 7:56 mark of the second half, VSU's Richard Granberry hit a lay up to give the Trojans a 44-43 lead. Both teams exchanged buckets over the next few minutes of play.
Kevin Kuteyi hit a pair of free throws with :48 ticks on the clock to pull Chowan within two points at 56-58 but the Trojans got a lay up by Granberry and a pair of free throws from Waymond Wright that would help them ice the win over the home standing Hawks.
Kuteyi led the squad with 16 points while teammates
Marco Haskins and
Joe Goodwin chipped in 14 and 11 points respectively. For VSU, Granberry led the field with 23 points in the game.
Chowan will get back to action on Saturday with a 4:00pm tip off at Bowie State University.
