Erskine Takes Two from Chowan to Open Hawks Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO, NC - The Chowan University softball team fell to 3-9 on the year after dropping a doubleheader to Erskine College on the opening day of the Hawks Softball Classic. Chowan fell 4-2 in extra innings in the first game and dropped the night cap 9-0. 

Erskine took an early 1-0 lead after Brittany Rhinehardt scored on a Sydney Smith sacrifice fly in the opening frame. The Hawks answered in the bottom of the third inning. Kris Neal drew a walk, stole second, and moved to third base on a wild pitch by Erskine. Neal took advantage of another wild pitch by Erskine, sliding home, to knot th game at 1-1. 

Erskine battled back to take the lead in the top of the fourth inning but it was short lived. CU's Danielle Baccus hammered a solo homerun over the left field fence in the ensuing frame to tie the game again, this time at 2-2. Kayla Robins and the Hawks defense went to work to keep the Flying Fleet off the board through regulation play. With the game still knotted up at 2-2 at the end of seven innings, the game went international tie breaker play. Erskine took advantage of the runner in scoring position. They collected two runs off of two hits, putting the Hawks in the hole in the bottom of the 8th inning. Erskine's Samantha Schimdt retired the side to pick up the win for her squad. 

Robins struck out 11 Erskine batters. She gave up three earned runs off of nine hits. Chowan was held to three hits in game. 

Erskine took game two in five innings with a final score of 9-0. Erskine's Candace Fitch held Chowan to three hits in the game. Tina White, Brook Bowen, and Baccus accounted for one hit apiece. Audrey Hubbard picked up the loss on the mound after throwing 4.2 innings. She gave up nine hits and seven earned runs and struck out three Flying Fleet batters. 

The Hawks Softball Classic will continue through Sunday. Tomorrow's action will pick up again at 9:00am at Hawks Field. For a complete schedule click here.
