Salem Pulls Away From Hawks MBB In Overtime

SALEM, W.Va.- Career afternoons by Robert Grubbs and Dino Muminovic was not enough for Chowan Men's Basketball as the Hawks fall to Salem on the road 90-85 in overtime on Saturday afternoon.

Robert Grubbs notched a career-high 28 points knocking down five shots from behind the arc to lead the Hawks.  Dino Muminovic hauled in a program best 18 rebounds on his way to a second straight double-double with 19 points.

Tim Hewett chipped in with 19 points and seven assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Chowan got on the board first with a bucket by Trevis Buckhanon.  Dino Muminovic hit a jumper to give the Hawks the 4-2 lead early before Salem went on a 13-0 run jumping out to a 15-4 advantage at the first media timeout.

The Hawks would counter with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 15-11 as Trevis Buckhanon started the run at the free throw line with a pair.  Robert Grubbs knocked down a three followed by a jumper by Tim Hewett to end the run.

Following a bucket by Salem, Chowan went on an 11-4 run to knot the contest at 26-all with 7:57 remaining in the half.  The run was aided by three triples as Demetrius Sanders knocked down two with Tim Hewett's triple tying the contest.

The Tigers pushed forward again with a 10-2 run as Dino Muminovic tallied the lone bucket during the spurt as Salem led 36-28 with over five minutes to play in the half.

CU continued to chip away at their deficit as Robert Grubbs, Brandon Mayhan, and Keon Tucker knocked down threes to end the half.  Tim Hewett hit a jumper in the final minute of the half to send the Hawks into the locker room tied at 42-all.

Second Half:

Chowan opened up the half on a 7-1 run to take the lead, 49-43.  Robert Grubbs started the half with a jumper before Tim Hewett knocked down a trey and Dino Muminovic's layup during the run.

Robert Grubbs knocked down a three to keep the Hawks in front as the Tigers cut the deficit to four.  The Tigers made another push to trim the deficit before Dino Muminovic and Grubbs knocked down a three to give the Hawks their largest lead of the contest at 60-50.

Salem would tie the contest with a 14-4 run over the next six minutes of action.  Robert Grubbs would hand the lead back to the Hawks with eight straight points, 72-64.

The Tigers would chip away at the deficit from the charity stripe as the contest went to overtime at 75-all.

Overtime:

Dino Muminovic would give the Hawks a lead in overtime with four straight points.  The Tigers found their stroke from behind the arc finding the go-ahead baskets.

The Hawks were unable to find a bucket down the stretch as Salem defeated the Hawks 90-85.

UP NEXT

Chowan returns home on December 6 to face Mount Olive in the final non-conference contest before CIAA play begins.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm.
