Hawks MBB Falls At Buzzer At Fayetteville State

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Chowan Men's Basketball team had a chance at the buzzer but was unable to fall as Fayetteville State handed the Hawks their sixth straight loss, 72-71, on Thursday evening in CIAA play.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Tim Hewett posted 18 of his 25 points in the first half.  Robert Grubbs notched 16 points including four threes.  Trevis Buckhanon and Dino Muminovic tallied 13 points each.  Muminovic led the Hawks with seven rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

The opening minutes of the half started slow for both team as Tim Hewett put the Hawks on the board three minutes into the contest.  Quickly following Robert Grubbs knocked down a trey along with Trevis Buckhanon and Tim Hewett notching baskets in the paint forcing a timeout by the Broncos trailing 9-4.

Robert Grubbs drained another triple to move the run to 12-0 before the Broncos ended the run with a trey at the other end.  Grubbs would knock down a three to push the Hawks back to a six point advantage, 16-10.

Back-to-back treys by Tim Hewett widened the Hawks advantage to double-up the Broncos, 24-12, midway through the half.  The Broncos would close the gap to 24-21 after four straight baskets.  Brandon Mayhan drained a corner trey to end the run.

Tim Hewett would give the Hawks some breathing room with two buckets pushing the Hawks to a 35-28 advantage in the final segment of the first half.

Fayetteville State would stay in the contest going 9-12 from the charity stripe.  The Hawks would head into the locker room with a 39-34 advantage.

Second Half:

Coming out of the locker room the Broncos trimmed the lead to one, 39-38, before Robert Grubbs drained a three to put the Hawks on the board in the half.

Fayetteville State would take their first lead of the contest since 4-2 with a bucket in the paint, but a tough basket by Trevis Buckhanon and Robert Grubbs gave the Hawks the lead back, 46-43.

The Broncos took the lead right back with 14 minutes to play, 49-48, with a trey as the shot clock expired.  FSU widened their margin to 53-48 before a forceful dunk by Trevis Buckhanon closed the gap momentarily.  A triple and a dunk by Fayetteville State pushed their lead back out to 58-50.

Chowan rallied back to trim the deficit to one, 58-57, as Dino Muminovic drained a trey from the top of the key.  Trevis Buckhanon sparked the run with a dunk.  Tim Hewett knocked down a long two knotted the contest up at 60-all forcing a timeout with 7:12 remaining.

The Hawks regained the lead, 65-60, as Dino Muminovic finished down low along with a pair of freebies by Tim Hewett.  The Broncos trimmed the deficit slightly before Trevis Buckhanon chipped in with a pair from the stripe.

Fayetteville State would not go away quietly as the Broncos went on a run to take the lead back 70-67 with under two minutes to play.  Dino Muminovic would clean up the glass and finish to trim the deficit to one, 70-69.  The Broncos would push their advantage back out to three with a pair from the stripe.

A pair of free throws by Tim Hewett closes the gap once again with 46 seconds to play.  Tim Hewett had a chance for the win at the buzzer but the attempt rattled out as the Broncos took the win 72-71.

UP NEXT

Chowan will travel to Raleigh, N.C. to face St. Augustine's on December 18.  The Hawks dropped the first meeting of the season 68-64 at home.
