Chowan MBB Falls Short Against Shaw On Road

RALEIGH, N.C. – Tim Hewett's near triple-double was not enough to overcome the early deficit as the Chowan Men's Basketball team dropped the CIAA road opener against Shaw, 87-80, on Tuesday evening.

Tim Hewett nearly notched the program's first-ever triple double as the senior stuffed the boxscore with 25 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists.

Brandon Mayhan scored 19 points on 7-11 shooting including 4-6 from behind the arc.  Dino Muminovic notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.  Trevis Buckhanon and Robert Grubbs grabbed nine boards each scoring nine and eight points respectively.

Chowan shot 52.2% from the stripe (12-23).

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Shaw gained the early advantage with a quick 6-0 run.  Tim Hewett closed the gap with a jumper and a triple.  Trevis Buckhanon gave the Hawks a 7-6 lead connecting on the front end of the three point play.  Robert Grubbs connected from deep to continue the early run.  Shaw notched a bucket before Buckhanon finished with a jumper to give the Hawks a 12-8 lead at the media timeout.

Coming out of the timeout Shaw went on a 10-0 run to regain the lead, 18-12, to force Chowan to call a timeout.  Shaw pushed their advantage to 25-12 before Trevis Buckhanon goes 1-2 from the stripe and knocks down a jumper to end the Bear attack.

Brandon Mayhan knocked down a trey with 7:55 remaining in the half to cut the Shaw lead to seven, 27-20.  Trevis Buckhanon gave the Hawks life as Mayhan found Buckhanon with the dunk.  Robert Grubbs answered after a Shaw trey to keep the contest at a seven point deficit.

Shaw continued to push forward as back-to-back threes gave the Bears a double-digit lead, 40-26, before Dino Muminovic followed his miss to end the spurt.

The Hawks picked up points from the stripe before Brandon Mayhan drained a three and a layup to end the drought to close the gap 48-36 to end the half.

Second Half:

Tim Hewett tallied two baskets to trim the deficit to 10, 50-40, early in the half.  Brandon Mayhan trimmed the deficit under double-figures before a Bear triple pushed the lead back to double-figures.

Brandon Mayhan added another bucket along with a Dino Muminovic dunk to keep the deficit manageable at 57-47.

Following the media timeout, Brandon Mayhan drained his third trey of the contest to cut the deficit to seven, 57-50.  Shaw once again pushed their lead to double-figures with 12 minutes to play.

Tim Hewett ended the run with a three but missed free throws allowed the Bears to keep their double-digit advantage.  Hewett finished at the rim following a media timeout but the Bears continued to answer at the other end.

Shaw would notch their largest lead of the contest at 17, 74-57, as a steal and a dunk forced the Hawks to call a timeout.  Dino Muminovic grabbed six quick points in the paint to chip away slightly at the deficit, 78-65.

Brandon Mayhan drained a three along with a layup by Tim Hewett trimmed the deficit to 10, 80-70, with 2:53 remaining in regulation.  Hewett added another bucket before the Bears pushed their lead back to double-figures.

Diamante Brown and Tim Hewett notched a bucket each to close the gap to six, 82-76, with 1:12 remaining in regulation.  Hewett continued his scoring barrage with a bucket with 25.9 seconds following a split from the stripe by the Bears.

Diamante Brown grabbed a bucket late but the Hawks were unable to finish the comeback as the Bears escape with an 87-80 win.

UP NEXT

Chowan will look to end their skid as CIAA play continues on Thursday, December 14 as the Hawks travel to Fayetteville State.
