Chowan MBB Drops Road Contest At USC Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. – The Chowan Men's Basketball team suffered their first loss of the young season as the shots were not falling for the Hawks dropping a 91-76 decision to USC Aiken in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

Six players for the Hawks scored in double-figures with Gus Rowland leading with 14 points.  Trevis Buckhanon notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.  Buckhanon added five blocks as Dino Muminovic tied a program best seven blocks to go with his 10 points.

Robert Grubbs (11), Demetrius Sanders (10), and Brandon Mayhan (10) scored in double-figures.

Chowan had 23 turnovers leading to 28 points for the Pacers.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Chowan and USC Aiken traded points for the early portion of the half.  Trevis Buckhanon opened the scoring for the Hawks.  Demetrius Sanders, Robert Grubbs, Gus Rowland, and Tim Hewett notched baskets to keep pace with the Pacers trailing 12-10.

Following the under 16 media timeout, the Hawks struggled from the floor going 7:37 without a point as USC Aiken extended their advantage to 22-12 before Demetrius Sanders took the lid off the basket with a jumper.

Brandon Mayhan and Tim Hewett added a bucket each to cut the deficit to 22-16 with 6:47 remaining in the half.  USC Aiken moved the advantage back to double-figures before Dino Muminovic knocked down a bucket.

The Hawks trailed 39-26 at the half.

Second Half:

Chowan would continue to chip away at the early deficit as Brandon Mayhan knocked down the first triple of the contest for the Hawks.

The Hawks would score their next six points from the charity stripe trailing the Pacers 53-41.

After a double technical foul against the Pacers, Robert Grubbs knocked down all four from the stripe followed by the subsequent tallies from Gus Rowland cut the deficit to 53-49 with 13:20 remaining in the contest.

USC Aiken shifted the momentum back in their favor with an 11-0 run before Dino Muminovic with two freebies.

The Pacers continued to add to their lead despite the defensive efforts by Trevis Buckhanon and Dino Muminovic with multiple blocks.

USC Aiken milked the clock to take the 91-76 victory.

UP NEXT

Chowan will return home for a midweek non-conference contest against St. Augustine's on Wednesday, November 29.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm.
