Last Minute Bucket Lifts Johnson C. Smith over Chowan

CU's Jeremy Smith led all scorers with 19 points in Thursday's loss to JCSU
Box Score CHARLOTTE, NC - The Chowan University men's basketball team dropped a tough game to CIAA Southern Division rival Johnson C. Smith University on Thursday night. Johnson C. Smith's Christian Kirchman hit a lay up with :24 ticks on the game clock to give the home standing Golden Bulls a one point lead and eventual 72-68 win. The Hawks fall to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the CIAA after Thursday's loss. 

The Hawks were dealt their first CIAA loss of the season on Thursday. Chowan hit for just 37% (22-60) from the floor in a game that saw seven ties and 10 different lead changes. It was the Golden Bulls who would have the final say in the game after Kirchman's lay up and subsequent made free throw helped to iced the game.

CU's Marco Haskins drained a three pointer to knot the game at 67-67 with 2:04 to play in the game. Haskin's basket would be the last field goal the Hawks would score in the contest. Carlos Arroyo gave Chowan a one point lead after hitting 1-2 from the foul line with just over a minute to play in the game. Following Kirchman's lay up and made foul shot, the Golden Bulls took a 70-68 lead. The Hawks were forced to foul in the waning seconds which sent JCSU's Christian Williams to the foul line with :07 on the clock. Williams sunk both foul shots to ice the game at 72-68.

Jeremy Smith paced the Hawks with 19 points and nine boards while Kevin Kuteyi hit for 15 points. Haskins and Hank Edmonds each chipped in 11 points in the loss. For JSCU, Kirchman, Williams, and Cayse Minor each scored 15 points. 

Chowan, now 8-3 overall and 3-1 in league play, will travel to Winston-Salem State University on Saturday, January 9th, in their next outing. Tip off is slated for 4:00pm at Winston-Salem State University. Fans should check the athletics website at www.gocuhawks.com for weather related game updates on Saturday.
