Box Score 2 RALEIGH, NC- The Chowan University softball team split a pair of games and fell into the loser's bracket in the opening day of play at the CIAA Softball Championship. The Hawks defeated Saint Augustine's University 3-2 in an eight-inning affair before falling to Winston-Salem State University 3-2 in the quarterfinal round. Chowan looks to fight their way back through the double elimination bracket on Friday, and takes on Virginia Union University on Friday at 10am.
The Hawks struck first in the first contest using an RBI single by
Tori Cragan. Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth, Saint Augustine's used Akera McPhaul's groundout and a Chowan error to take a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, a sacrifice fly by
Katrina Simmons knotted the score 2-2, and sent the contest into extra innings.
Kayla Robins led the Hawks out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the eighth to set the stage for late-game heroics for Chowan. With
Kris Neal on third,
Haley Cox hit a sacrifice fly to give Chowan all they would need to secure the 3-2 win.
Neal recorded two hits in the win for the Hawks with Cragan, Simmons, and
Tina White each notching one hit apiece. Robins picked up her 15th win of the season on the mound and surrendered six hits and two runs (two unearned) in eight innings of work.
McPhaul led the Lady Falcons at the plate with two hits and one RBI. Marley Parker was credited with the loss. She allowed two hits and two runs (one earned) over the course of 3.2 innings.
In the winners' bracket quarterfinal, the Hawks squared off against Winston-Salem State University. The Rams struck first in the contest using Destiny Snipes' RBI single in the top of the third. Chowan answered in the bottom of the fourth behind
Danielle Baccus' sacrifice fly. With the score tied 1-1 in the sixth, the Rams took a 3-1 lead behind Tiarra Delaney's two-run double to left field. In Chowan's final at-bat, the Hawks scored one run using Coopers RBI single, but a double-play by Winston-Salem State ended the scoring threat and handed the Hawks the 3-2 setback.
The Hawks tallied six hits in the setback led by White with two hits. Baccus and Cooper each recorded one RBI apiece. Five different Rams accounted for five hits for Winston-Salem State.
Robins took the loss for Chowan on the mound. She surrendered five hits and three runs (one earned) in seven innings of work. Mercedes Hargett recorded the win for Winston-Salem State. She held the Hawks to six hits and two runs (one earned) in seven innings of work.
