Hawks Roll past Virginia Union

Kayla Robins earned a win and save on Sunday while recording 18 strikeouts.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO – The Chowan University softball team earned two CIAA Northern Division victories on Sunday afternoon.  The Hawks defeated Virginia Union University 8-1 in the opening game of the day and edged the Lady Panthers 5-3 in the nightcap.  Chowan improves to 23-12 overall and 11-0 in CIAA play with the wins while Virginia Union slides to 14-12 overall and 8-6 in league play. 

In game one, the Hawks plated five runs in their first at-bat using Tori Cragan's RBI double, Kris Neal's three-run homerun and an RBI triple by Danielle Baccus.  Chowan added two runs in the third using Kennsey Epley's two-run blast.  Shontel Linette homered in the forth to put Virginia Union on the board before Haley Cooper's RBI double pushed the Hawks ahead 8-1 in the bottom of the frame.

Haley Cooper tallied three hits in the win with Baccus, Epley and Neal each recording two hits apiece.  Neal and Epley accounted for a combined five RBIs for Chowan.    
Kayla Robins held the Lady Panthers to two hits in the contest while striking out 12 batters. 
Cooper's RBI single in the bottom of the first gave the Hawks an early 1-0 edge in game two.  Baccus' two-run single in the fourth gave Chowan some breathing room and a 3-0 cushion.  A fielder's choice in the fourth led to an additional run for the Hawks. 

Virginia Union took advantage of a pair of Chowan errors and an RBI single b in the fifth to plate three runs.  The Hawks answered back with one run in the sixth after Epley's groundout.  After entering the game in-relief, Robins kept Virginia Union off the scoreboard to secure the 5-3 win. 

Audrey Hubbard earned the win on the mound for the Hawks.  She surrendered four hits and three runs (unearned) in five innings of work.  Robins pitched two scoreless innings to earn the save and recorded six strikeouts. 

Cooper and Neal each tallied two hits in the nightcap with Baccus notching two RBI. 

Shontel Linnette was credited with the loss in game two.  She surrendered five runs (three earned) in six innings of work. 

The Hawks return to action on April 23rd to host Lincoln University (PA) and Bowie State University on April 24th.  Saturday's games will the Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day for the Hawks with Senior Day occurring on Sunday.
