Box Score 2 PETERSBURG, VA- The Chowan University softball team picked up two CIAA Northern Division wins on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks defeated Virginia State University 3-0 in their first game of the day and topped the Trojans 5-1 in the nightcap. Chowan improves to 21-12 overall and 10-0 in CIAA play with the victories.
In the opening game, the Hawks plated three runs in the first inning behind
Haley Cooper's RBI and
Kris Neal's two-run double.
Kayla Robins and the Hawks' defense took over from there, holding the Trojans scoreless through seven innings of play. Robins surrendered just one hit in the contest while striking out 12 batters to earn the 3-0 win on the mound.
Cooper and
Katrina Simmons each notched two hits in the contest with Neal accounted for two RBI.
In the nightcap,
Tori Cragan's double and Cooper's single led to two runs for Chowan in the first.
Cooper's RBI triple and Neal's sacrifice fly led to two additional runs for the Hawks in the third. Chowan extended the advantage in the fourth using a groundout by Simmons to take a 5-0 lead. The Trojans plated one run in the fifth but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Tina White collected three hits in the win while Cragan, Cooper, and
Kennsey Epley notch two hits apiece in the victory. Robins recorded the win for Chowan in game two. She held the Trojans to five hits and one earned run in seven innings of work while striking out 13 batters.
Chowan returns to action on Sunday as the Hawks host Virginia Union University in CIAA Northern Division play. First pitch is slated for 12:00pm. Sunday's game also serves as Chowan's 3
rd Annual Fence of Fame Game.
