Box Score 2 LAURINBURG, NC- The Chowan University softball team swept the St. Andrews University Knights on Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks improve to 11-7 on the season with the wins while the Knights slip to 4-17 on the year after Tuesday's setbacks. Chowan topped St. Andrews 1-0 in the first game of the afternoon before securing a 7-4 win in the nightcap.
After five scoreless innings in the opening contest,
Katrina Simmons' lead-off triple in the sixth led to a sacrifice fly by
Tori Cragan to give Chowan a 1-0 edge. The Hawks' defense held off the Knights in their final at-bats, allowing Chowan to secure the victory.
Kayla Robins earned the win on the mound for the Chowan Blue and White. She scattered four hits over the course of seven innings while striking out 12 batters.
Danielle Baccus paced the Hawks offensively in game one with two hits while Cragan,
Kris Neal, and Simmons each recorded hits in the victory.
Hawley Ill took the loss for St. Andrews. She tallied 10 strikeouts while holding the Hawks to five hits and one earned run. Jenny Castanon recorded two hits in the setback for St. Andrews.
In the nightcap, the Hawks grabbed a quick 5-0 lead in the top of the first using RBI singles by Baccus,
Haley Cooper, and
Donya Salman along with Neal's two-run triple.
The Knights responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame after an RBI single by Katie Lougee and MeKayla Valentine's RBI double. An errant throw by the Hawks led to an additional run for the Knights in the third but an RBI single by Baccus in the fourth pushed Chowan ahead 6-3. St. Andrews scored once more in the bottom of the sixth using an RBI single by Kori Ballard but Cooper's homerun in the seventh propelled the Hawks to the 7-4 win.
Chowan pounded out 12 hits over the course of the second game with Baccus, Cooper, Salman, and
Tina White each tallying two hits apiece. Ballard and Sam Lowder each tallied two hits for the Knights.
Robins was credited with the win on the mound in game two after entering the contest in-relief of
Audrey Hubbard and
Delanie Winslow. She tossed 4.2 innings in the victory and surrendered one earned run off of three hits while striking out seven batters. Robins totaled 19 strikeouts over the course of the afternoon and has won her last five straight outings for the Chowan Blue and White.
Nancy Amos gave-up seven runs (seven earned) off of 12 hits while striking out four in the loss for the Knights.
The Hawks return to action March 11
th - 13
th as Chowan travels to Salem, Virginia to compete in the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament.
