Box Score 2 RALEIGH, NC- The Chowan University softball team picked up two wins on Saturday at the Shaw University Challenge. The Hawks defeated Tusculum College 6-2 in the opening game of the day before earning a 10-2 win over Mansfield University in game two. Chowan improves to 8-7 on the season after Saturday's wins.
In the opening contest, the Hawks raced to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first using RBI singles by
Danielle Baccus and
Kris Neal. Chowan plated four additional runs in the second behind a Pioneer error,
Tina White's RBI double and sacrifice flies from
Tori Cragan and Baccus.
A two-run homerun by Treslyn Reese in the bottom of the fifth put the Pioneers on the board but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Baccus, Neal and White each tallied two hits in the victory for the Chowan Blue and White.
Kayla Robins picked up the win on the mound. She held the Pioneers to three hits and two runs (two earned)over the course of seven innings while striking out five.
Cayla Cecil took the loss for Tusculum. She surrendered six runs (three earned) off of nine hits while collecting four strikeouts.
In the second game of the day, the Hawks jumped to a quick 3-0 lead in their first at-bat, taking advantage of an error by Mansfield and RBI singles by
Haley Cooper and
Kennsey Epley. An RBI double by Hannah Secord allowed the Mounties to score in the top of the second before Baccus' RBI single and a two-run double by Neal in the bottom of the frame pushed Chowan ahead 6-1.
Groundouts by Baccus and Epley along with Cooper's base hit up the middle gave the Hawks a commanding 9-1 lead in the third. An RBI single by Baccus in the fourth pushed Chowan ahead 10-1. The Mounties plated one run in the fifth, scoring on a wild pitch, but the damage was done and the Hawks secured the 10-2 win.
White led the effort with three hits for Chowan with Baccus and Cooper each tallying two hits in the win. Baccus knocked in three RBI with Cooper, Epley, and Neal each recording two RBIs in the second game.
Delanie Winslow earned the win on the mound for Chowan. She scattered seven hits over five innings of work, giving up two runs (both earned) while striking out four batters.

The Hawks return to action on Sunday in the final day of play at the Shaw University Challenge. Chowan takes on Millersville University at 12:00pm.
