Box Score 2 RALEIGH, NC- The Chowan University softball team picked up a pair of victories on the first day of play at the Shaw University Challenge on Friday evening. The Hawks improve to 6-7 on the year with the wins. Chowan defeated Alderson-Broaddus University 7-0 in the opening contest before edging Fairmont State University 3-2 in the nightcap.
In the opening game, Tina White's triple and Tori Cragan's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first led to a run for the Hawks, giving Chowan a 1-0 advantage. White's double in the bottom of the third pushed the Hawks ahead 2-0, allowing Chowan to hang on to the momentum. A sacrifice fly by Kennsey Epley and RBI single by Haley Cox extended Chowan's lead to 4-0 in the fourth. A fielder's choice followed by RBI singles by Haley Cooper and Kris Neal resulted in a 7-0 advantage for the Chowan Blue and White after five innings of play.The Battlers were unable to respond offensively, resulting in the 7-0 victory for the Chowan Blue and White.
Kayla Robins earned the shutout win on the mound. She threw all seven innings in the victory, scattering five hits while striking out 10 batters.
Cox and White each tallied three hits in the victory for the Hawks.Emily Davis was credited with the loss. She surrendered 11 hits and five earned runs over seven innings of work.
In the nightcap, a Chowan error in the bottom of the second led to a 1-0 lead for Fairmont State University. The Hawks answered back with a two-run single by Cox to pull away 2-1 in the top of the fourth before a solo homerun by Addie Fuller for Fairmont State knotted the score 2-2 in the fifth.
After a trio of singles in the top of the seventh, Cragan answered the call for the Hawks, pushing the ball through the right side, allowing
Rachel Clark to score and giving the Hawks the 3-2 go-ahead.
Audrey Hubbard shut the Falcons down in the bottom of the frame, securing the victory for Chowan.
Hubbard tossed all seven innings in the victory for Chowan, scattering four hits while striking out two.
Katrina Simmons led the effort for the Hawks at the plate with three hits in the victory.
Devin Williams took the loss on the mound for Fairmont State. She entered the game in-relief of Rachel Bias and tossed 3.1 innings in the setback.
The Hawks return to Walnut Creek Softball Complex on Saturday to take on Tusculum College at 1:00pm and Mansfield University at 4:00pm.
