Box Score ROME, GA- The Chowan University women's lacrosse team dropped a 15-9 decision to Shorter University on Monday afternoon. The Chowan Hawks slide to 1-10 on the season while the Shorter Hawks improve to 3-9 on the year.
Crystal Marshall scored a team-high five goals for Shorter. Aubrey Geiger notched four goals in the victory with Alex Abbey and Kari Chambers each found the back of the net twice for the Hawks. Tiffany Kongpachith and Anna Kate Dulaney both scored once over the course of the contest. Catherine Mitchner made six saves in goal for Shorter.
Mackenzie Reid led the Chowan Hawks with five goals in the loss.
Adriea Herndon added three scores in the contest while
Cindy Escobar added one goal in the setback.
Haley Haggard made 11 saves in goal for the Chowan Blue and White.
Shorter jumped to a quick 4-0 lead before Reid's goal at the 22:58 mark put Chowan on the board. Geiger's score less than one minute later led to six unanswered goals for Shorter. Trailing 10-1 with 1:18 left in the half, Reid found the back of the net to end the scoring drought for Chowan. Dulaney answered with a score immediately after a draw control to push Shorter ahead 11-2. Reid took advantage of a caused turnover and ground ball in the final seconds of the half to notch her third goal of the contest, but Chowan headed into halftime trailing 11-3.
Chowan rallied in the second half to pull within striking distance. With 22:28 on the clock, Reid used a free position shot to make the score 11-4. Two minutes later, Escobar found the back of the net using an assist from Reid. Back-to-back scores by Herndon shifted the momentum in Chowan's favor and left Shorter clinging to an 11-7 advantage with 14:45 left in the game.
Back-to-back goals by Shorter resulted in Chowan looking to claw back from a 13-7 deficit with 5:03 remaining in the contest. An unassisted goal by Herndon made the score 13-8 but Abbey's score with 2:25 clock gave Shorter a 14-8 edge. Reid found the back of the net once more for Chowan using a free position shot but a late score for Shorter handed Chowan the 15-9 setback.
