Box Score 2 RALEIGH, NC- The Chowan University softball team concluded play at the CIAA Round-Up on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks defeated Winston-Salem State University 8-0 in the first game of the day before edging Fayetteville State University 10-8 in the final contest of the weekend. Chowan moves to 17-12 on the season with the wins.
After two scoreless innings of play against the Rams, the Hawks took advantage of two Winston-Salem State errors to plate one run in the bottom of the third. Holding a 1-0 advantage in the fourth, a pair of two-run errors in the outfield along with
Katrina Simmons' RBI single led to a five-run fifth inning for Chowan.
White's RBI double and
Danielle Baccus' infield single in the sixth gave the Hawks all they would need to secure the 8-0 victory over Winston-Salem State.
Kayla Robins earned the win for the Hawks on the mound. She held the Rams to three hits while striking out seven batters over six innings of work. Mercedes Hargett took the loss after surrendering eight runs (four earned) in 5.1 innings. She recorded eight strikeouts in the setback.
Chowan totaled nine hits in the first game led by
Kris Neal and Simmons with two hits apiece. Baccus accounted for three RBI in the win.
In the second game of the day, the Hawks scored two runs in the top of the first using
Katlyn Brummett's two-run single. The Lady Broncos answered back with three runs in the bottom of the frame behind HaLee Knowles' two-run triple and Brittany Freeman's RBI single. Fayetteville State built on the lead in the bottom of the second using Zoe Howard's RBI single, Alex Wickham's bunt, and a groundout by Knowles.
The Hawks answered back in the top of third, taking advantage of an error and three-run homerun by Neal to knot the score 6-6. White's triple and Simmons' sacrifice fly in the fourth pushed Chowan ahead 8-6 but Knowles' RBI double and Shi-Cara Goins' RBI single tied the score once more in the fifth. A two-run error by Fayetteville State in the sixth gave the Hawks a 10-8 advantage.
Kayla Robins shut down the Lady Broncos in their final at-bat, handing Chowan the 10-8 victory. Robins picked up the save on the mound while
Delanie Winslow was credited with the win. Neal and White each tallied two hits in the victory. Brummett notched four RBI followed by Neal who knocked in three runs.
Zoe Howard took the loss on the mound for Fayetteville State. She surrendered 10 runs (four earned) off of six hits while striking out two batters.
The Hawks return to action on April 9
th. Chowan travels to Elizabeth City State University to take on the Lady Vikings. First pitch for the CIAA Northern Division series is slated for 12:00pm.
