Hawks Open CIAA Play with Three Wins, Hubbard Tosses Perfect Game

Audrey Hubbard threw a perfect game on Friday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 RALEIGH, NC – The Chowan University softball team opened CIAA action on Friday with three wins in crossover play.  The Hawks started the day with an 8-0 win over Johnson C. Smith University and 18-0 victory over Livingstone College before defeating Saint Augustine's University 15-2 in the nightcap.  The Hawks improve to 14-12 on the season with the wins. 

In the first game of the day, Chowan plated four runs in the bottom of the third using Tina White's sacrifice fly, Haley Cooper's RBI single and Katlyn Brumett's two-run single to grab an early 4-0 lead.  The Hawks tacked on two runs in the fourth using a Golden Bull error and RBI single by White.  Donya Salman's RBI double and a Johnson C. Smith error led to two additional runs in the fifth for Chowan, propelling the Hawks to the 8-0 victory. 

Chowan recorded eight hits in the win.  Brummett recorded two hits and two RBI while White added one hit and two RBI in the victory.  Kayla Robins earned the shutout win on the mound.  She held the Golden Bulls to two hits while striking out five batters. 

Victoria Lopez took the loss on the mound for Johnson C. Smith.  Tia Mahoney and Melissa Vierra each recorded one hit in the setback. 

The Hawks kept the momentum going in their second game of the afternoon, topping Livingstone 18-0 behind a perfect outing on the mound by Audrey Hubbard
Chowan plated four runs in the first using a bases-loaded walk, RBI single by Danielle Baccus, Salman's groundout and Haley Cox's bunt single.  Holding an early 4-0 lead, the Hawks took advantage of a two-run error, RBI single by Brummett and stolen base to pull away 8-0 in top of the second. 

A Lady Blue Bear error, sacrifice fly's by White and Brummett along with Baccus' triple in the third left Livingstone trailing 12-0. 

In the top of the fourth, Kris Neal's sacrifice fly, two bases-loaded walks, Baccus' RBI single and Salman's two-run single propelled the Hawks to the 18-0 victory. 

Hubbard retired all 15 Livingstone batters in order and collected eight strikeouts in the win.  She is the first Hawk since the 2010 season (Lacey Wildeboer, 3/13/2010, Virginia Union University) to pitch a perfect game. 

Baccus tallied three hits and knocked in three RBI in the win while Cragan and Rachel Clark each recorded two hits for the Chowan Blue and White.  Brummett knocked in four RBI with Salman adding three RBI in the victory.

 Alexis Smoot took the loss for Livingstone.  She surrendered 12 runs (four earned) off of seven hits.  Ruki Garland entered the contest in-relief and gave-up six runs (six earned) off of eight hits in two innings of work. 

The Hawks concluded the first day of play at the CIAA Round-Up with a 15-2 win over the Saint Augustine's Lady Falcons.
 
Cooper's two-run double gave the Hawks an early jump in the bottom of the first before White's three-run triple and Cragan's sacrifice fly pushed Chowan ahead 6-0.  Haili Pettifer put the Lady Falcons on the board in the third with a single up the middle but the Hawks capitalized on a nine-run fourth inning to pull away with a commanding 15-1 lead.  Saint Augustine's responded with one run in their final at-bat but Chowan easily secured the 15-2 win. 

The Hawks tallied seven hits in the nightcap led by Cooper with two hits.  Baccus, Brummett, Clark, Cox, Simmons and White each added one hit apiece in the win.  Delanie Winslow was credited with the win on the mound.  She surrendered one earned run in 2.1 innings of work while striking out five batters.  Robins entered the game in-relief and held the Lady Falcons to four hits and one earned while striking out six.

Korey Hill took the loss for Saint Augustine's.  She surrendered 12 runs (11 earned) and seven hits in 3.1 innings of work.  Jasmine Rios gave-up three earned runs in-relief. 
Due to impending inclement weather, Saturday's portion of the CIAA Round-Up has been altered.  Weather permitting, the Hawks will take on Shaw University on Saturday at 10am and will conclude play on Sunday as originally scheduled.
