Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University men's basketball team earned a commanding 77-58 victory over Elizabeth City State University on Saturday evening. The Hawks advance to 17-5 overall and 9-2 in CIAA play with the win. The Vikings slide to 7-11 overall and 4-7 in the league after Saturday's setback.
DeCarlos Anderson led the effort for the Vikings with 16 points in the loss. Jermaine Brown and Jordan Jones each grabbed six rebounds for Elizabeth City State.
Kortez Smith led all players in the game with 27 points while
Carlos Arroyo recorded a career-high 21 points for the Chowan Blue and White.
Joe Goodwin grabbed seven rebounds (two offensive, five defensive) for the Hawks.
After exchanging baskets early in the contest, the Hawks jumped out to a 10-4 lead by the 15:43 mark in the first half. A 5-1 run by the Hawks left Elizabeth City State trailing 15-5 with 12:55 on the clock. The Vikings were unable to recover from the early deficit and trailed by as many as 19 points (34-15) by the 5:56 mark after a layup by
Josh Mellette. Chowan continued to build on the momentum and used Smith's jumper at the end of the first half to take a 43-26 advantage into the halftime break.
Elizabeth City State was unable to recover in the second half, and the Hawks led by 17 points or more for the remainder of the contest before securing the 77-58 victory.
Chowan returns to action on February 10
th as the Hawks travel to take on Virginia State University. Tip-off for the CIAA Northern Division contest is slated for 7:30pm.
