Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University softball team picked up a 10-5 win over Barton College on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks improve to 4-5 on the season with the win while the Bulldogs move to 3-4 with the setback.
Barton struck first in the contest, scoring one run in the third before Chowan exploded in the bottom of the fourth, plating 10 runs off of 10 hits and two Bulldog errors.
Katlyn Brummett put the Hawks on the board, scoring on a Bulldog error to tie the score 1-1.
Kris Neal added to the offensive attack with an RBI double before
Rachel Clark added an RBI base hit knock. Holding a 3-1 lead,
Tina White and
Tori Cragan both knocked in one baserunner apiece before
Haley Cooper blasted a grand slam to left center to give the Hawks a commanding 9-1 advantage. Clark added an RBI single before the end of the frame to push the Hawks ahead 10-1.
Megan Kelly hit a three-run homer in the top of the fifth to give the Bulldogs some momentum. Brittany Jacobs knocked in a run using a fielder's choice but the rally was not enough to overcome the deficit, allowing the Hawks to secure the 10-5 win.
Kayla Robins picked up the win on the mound; her third in as many appearances. She threw 4.1 innings in the contest, surrendering five runs (four earned) off of eight hits.
Delanie Winslow tossed 2.2 innings in-relief.
Cooper tallied three hits with four RBI in the win while Clark and Neal each had two hits for the Chowan Blue and White.
Liz White suffered the loss on the mound. She gave up five runs (two earned) off of six hits. Hannah Jones threw 2.1 innings in-relief.Crystal Britton, Kelly and Jones each recorded two hits apiece for Barton.
Chowan returns to action on Sunday as the Hawks play host to West Chester University. First-pitch is slated for 11:00am. Sunday's games will serve as Strike Out Cancer Day for the Hawks.
