Fayetteville State Outlasts Chowan

Carlos Arroyo scored 16 points for the Hawks on Wednesday.
Box Score CHARLOTTE, NC - The Southern Division fifth-seeded Fayetteville State Broncos used a late rally to surge ahead of the North Division's fourth-seeded Chowan Hawks 62-54 in men's basketball action at the 2016 CIAA Tournament at Time Warner Cable Arena on Wednesday evening.

Fayetteville State (14-14) continues its quest in the CIAA Tournament while Chowan concludes its season at 19-9, which ties a program-best record set in the 2005-2006 season.

Carlos Arroyo led all players in the contest with 16 points while CIAA Rookie of the Year Marco Haskins and Jeremy Smith added 12 points and 11 points, respectively. Arroyo, Josh Mellette, and Smith all hauled in five rebounds for the Chowan Blue and White. The loss ended the collegiate careers of two Chowan seniors; Mellette and Kortez Smith.

Juwan Addison paced the Broncos with 14 points while Michael Tyson and Isaiah Vinson added 12 points apiece in the victory. Williams Tibbs grabbed a game-high nine rebounds (two offensive, seven defensive).

First half action saw the Chowan Hawks get out of the gate fast, as they jumped to a quick 8-1 lead over the first 7:02 of the game. Tyson broke the run with a layup that cut the lead to 8-3, but Haskins cashed in on a three-pointer at the 12:31 mark that put the Hawks on top 11-3.

The Broncos would embark on a 6-0 run of their own to trim the lead to 11-9 thanks to a bucket by Vinson and two Addison scores, the latter coming with 9:15 remaining. After Chowan extended their lead to 19-13 with an Arroyo three-pointer, Faytteville State went on another tear, this time an 8-2 push that culminated in a Jason Lee shot that brought the score to 22-21 at the 2:35 mark.

Chowan responded, this time with a seven point outburst over the last 4:27 of the half to take the 29-21 lead into the halftime break.

Arroyo started the second half strong for the Hawks, by scoring the first five points of the half with his first bucket, a three pointer, putting Chowan ahead 32-23. After a pair of Bronco free throws by Tibbs and an Addison shot cut the lead to 32-27 with 17:28 left, the teams traded baskets bringing the Hawk advantage to 34-29.

After Chowan had extended their lead once again to six points at 38-32, Fayetteville State fought their way back using a 6-0 run to tie it up at 38-38 after Tibbs followed his own miss with 10:55 left. The Broncos then took the lead after Tyson slipped behind the Chowan defense to take the 40-38 advantage; their second of the game.

Fayetteville State would then take a 45-40 ladvantage after two free throws by Dawson at the 7:24 mark. Chowan would then sandwich two baskets around a Fayetteville State score, with the latter being a three-pointer from Haskins that trimmed the Fayetteville State lead to 47-45. The Bronco lead dwindled to one point (47-46) after Smith converted a free throw following a Fayetteville State miss and foul.

A four-point spurt that included a layup and a tip-in from Tyson extended the Fayetteville State lead to 51-46. After a missed Chowan shot, Dawson drilled a three pointer following a 30-second timeout to put the lead at eight points (54-46) with just 3:44 remaining in the contest.

Chowan once again trimmed the Fayetteville State cushion to five points following a layup by Smith at the 2:33 mark but Juwan Addison knocked down two free throws for Fayetteville State to push the Broncos ahead 57-50.

A bucket by Tibbs with 1:10 made it a seven point game (59-52). A pair of Kortez Smith free throws brought Chowan back within striking distance at 59-54, but a Bronco free throw pushed Fayetteville State ahead 60-54 with 48 seconds remaining.

Chowan had another opportunity to further cut into the lead, but a Hawk turnover and subsequent foul allowed Timothy Haggie to solidify the game at the line by nailing two free throws with 19 seconds left, handing the Hawks the 62-54 setback.

The Broncos advance to quarterfinal action with the victory and square off against Virginia State University, the No. 1 seed out of the CIAA Northern Division. Tip-off is slated for 3:00pm on February 25th.
