Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University softball team split a pair of games on Sunday afternoon against the visiting Braves of UNC-Pembroke. The Hawks move to 3-5 on the season after Sunday's contests while the Braves move to 5-5-1 on the year. Sunday's games marked the Hawks' first home games of the season. Chowan picked up an 8-3 victory in the opening contest before falling 12-2 in the nightcap.
The Hawks jumped to a quick lead in the bottom of the first, plating three runs behind
Tina White's RBI single and on a two-run double by
Haley Cooper. In the top of the third, UNC-Pembroke got on the board using an RBI single by Abbey Walters. Chowan answered with three runs in their half of the frame behind
Katlyn Brummett's three-run homerun.
Walters hit an RBI single for the Braves in the top of the sixth and Toni Nelson's bunt single gave UNC-Pembroke an additional run.
Katelyn Simmons laced a triple down the right field line to give Chowan an additional run in the bottom of the sixth and
Tori Cragan added an RBI single to secure the 8-3 win for the Hawks in the opening game.
Simmons and Cragan each tallied three hits for the Hawks in the opening contest with Brummett and
Haley Cooper knocking in three and two RBI, respectively.
Kayla Robins picked up the win on the mound. She surrendered three runs (two earned) off of six hits in seven innings of work while striking out three batters. Katie Saunders was credited with the loss after giving up six runs (six earned) off of eight hits in two innings of work. Walters entered the contest in-relief and surrendered two runs (two earned) off of four hits over the course of four innings.
In game two, UNC-Pembroke took control of the contest right from the start, scoring two runs off of three hits and one Hawks error in the top of first. The Braves plated seven runs in the third using six hits and one Hawk error to pull away 9-0. Chowan mustered two runs in third with Cragan's two-run single up the middle. Three more runs in the fifth by UNC-Pembroke allowed the braves to secure the 12-2 victory.
Audrey Hubbard took the loss on the mound in game two. She gave up 12 runs (two earned) off of 15 hits.
Delanie Winslow entered the contest in-relief and struck out two batters.
Taylor Strickland picked up the win for the Braves. She held the Hawks to three hits and two runs (two earned) while striking out two.
Taylor Gerhart paced the Braves offensively with three hits in the night cap. Cragan,
Rachel Clark and Simmons each recorded hits in the setback.
Chowan returns to action on February 27
th-28
th to host the Hawks Classic. Chowan takes on Barton College on Saturday at 10:00am and battles West Chester University in a doubleheader match-up on Sunday. Sunday's games will serve as the team's Strike Out Cancer day.
