Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University women's lacrosse team opened the 2016 with a 20-4 loss on their home field on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks start the season 0-1 while the Bulldogs improve to 2-1 with the victory.
Paulena Dempsey led the effort for Wingate with six goals in the victory. Brittany Andrews added three goals with Jaclyn Chiesa, Madison Hobson, and Jenna Will notching two goals apiece. Megan Amrein, Anna Harbacevich, Emily Ketron, Emily Nosek, and Shannon O'Neal each recorded goals for the Bulldogs in the victory.
Adriea Herndon scored three goals for the Hawks in the setback while
Mackenzie Reid added a score off a free position shot in the loss.
The Bulldogs raced to a 3-0 lead in the first three minutes of play before Herndon's goal put the Hawks on the board. Wingate outscored Chowan 7-1 in the remainder of the first half, leaving the Hawks trailing 10-2 heading into halftime.
Wingate opened the second half with four unanswered goals before Herndon found the back of the net for the Chowan Blue and White with 21:24 left in the game. The Hawks were unable to overcome the deficit; falling to the Bulldogs 20-4.
Wingate out-shot the Hawks 33-9 over the course of the contest.
Haley Haggard recorded six saves in goal for the Chowan Blue and White while Arion Pierre and Nicole Hinkle combined for three saves in goal for Wingate.
Chowan returns to action on February 22
nd as Chowan travels to take on Converse College. First draw is slated for 4:00pm. The Hawks compete at home again on February 27
th in a 3:00pm contest against Catawba College.
