Erskine Hands Hawks Pair of Setbacks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DUE WEST, SC- The Chowan University softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday against Erskine College.  The Hawks fell to the Flying Fleet 11-10 after eight innings in game one and suffered a 10-0 setback in the nightcap.  Chowan slides to 0-4 on the short season while Erskine improves to 4-2 on the year.

In game one, the Hawks struck first in the contest using an RBI single by Katrina Simmons and a wild pitch to score two runs in the top of the first.  A Chowan error in the bottom of the frame allowed Erskine to score but a miscue by the Flying Fleet along with Tina White's two-run homer in the second pushed the Hawks ahead 5-1.

Mia Blochviak's two-run single in the second allowed the Flying Fleet to pull within striking distance before a three-run blast by Simmons handed the Hawks an 8-3 advantage in the third.  Erskine answered back in the bottom half of the frame with an RBI single by Jacquie Hill.

With an 8-4 lead in the sixth, Kennsey Epley's RBI single gave the Hawks an additional run and a 9-4 advantage.  Down but not out, the Flying Fleet regrouped in the seventh to score five runs off of four hits, tying the game 9-9 and forcing extra innings.

Chowan scored in the top of the eighth off of an RBI single by Haley Cooper but Erskine plated two runs in the eighth using an RBI double by Lydia Trexler and RBI single by Hill.

Kayla Robins took the loss on the mound for the Hawks after surrendering 11 runs (nine earned) off of 14 hits.  She struck out seven in the contest.  Candace Fitch earned the win for Erskine.  She threw 5.1 innings and gave up two runs (both unearned) while scattering four hits.

Simmons and White each tallied two hits and knocked in three RBIs.

Chowan was unable to recover in the nightcap as White was the lone Hawk to record a hit in the contest.

Erskine scored one run off of a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first and plated four runs in the second using a solo homerun by Trexler and three-run blast by Reagan Davis.  The Flying Fleet scored three runs in the third and two in the fourth to secure the 10-0 win.

Delanie Winslow took the loss on the mound after allowing five runs (five earned) off of four hits.  Audrey Hubbard entered the contest in-relief and surrendered five runs (five earned) off of six hits.

Candace Fitch earned the shutout win for Erskine.

Sunday's games against Queens University (Charlotte) have been postponed due to impending inclement weather. Details regarding a make-up date will be announced as they become available.

The Hawks look to recover on February 20th when they travel to take on Barton College.  First pitch is slated for 12:00pm.
