Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University men's basketball team dropped their second game in as many outings after a 78-62 loss to Bowie State University on Saturday evening. The Hawks slip to 17-7 on the year and 9-4 in league play with the loss while the Bulldogs improve to 15-10 overall and 8-5 against CIAA competition.
Jeremy Smith led all players in the game with 19 points and nine rebounds (four offensive, five defensive) while
Kortez Smith added 10 points.
Warren Powers notched nine points and eight rebounds (five offensive, three defensive) for the Chowan Blue and White.
Justin Beck scored 18 points in the win for Bowie State while collecting eight rebounds (three offensive, five defensive) while Andre Jackson added 17 points and eight rebounds (three offensive, five defensive). Julian Livingston notched 15 points in the victory for the Bulldogs.
The Hawks jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead at the start of the first half, but the Bulldogs used a 14-4 run to take a 14-8 lead by the 13:15 mark. Chowan remained within striking distance until the 2:54 mark when Beck's free throw gave Bowie State a 13 point lead (35-22). Tai Marshall's layup at the close of the first half left the Hawks trailing 39-30 heading into the locker room at halftime.
The Hawks chipped away at the deficit at the start of the second half, using a layup by
Carlos Arroyo to pull within two points (46-44) with 14:15 left to play. The Bulldogs refused to back down, extending their lead to as many as 21 points (70-49) after Livingston's three-pointer at the 6:49 mark before securing the 78-62 victory on Chowan's home court.
The Hawks look to recover on Monday as Chowan travels to square off against Bowie State. Tip-off for the CIAA Northern Division contest is slated for 7:00pm.
