Box Score PETERSBURG, VA- The Chowan University women's basketball team picked up their third straight win on Wednesday evening with a 50-46 victory over Virginia State University. The Hawks improve to 17-6 overall and 11-2 in CIAA play with the victory while the Trojans slide to 10-13 overall and 5-8 in the league after the setback. Wednesday marked the first road win for Chowan over Virginia State in women's basketball program history.
Jordan Payne led all players in the game with 19 points and nine rebounds (three offensive, six defensive) while
Dhyamond Crenshaw added 11 points and nine rebounds (seven offensive, two defensive).
Alisha Mobley netted 11 points and seven rebounds (three offensive, four defensive) in the victory.
Wynterra Pittman led the Trojans with 10 points while Kasuela Cooper hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds (seven offensive, six defensive).
Chowan dominated the first quarter, holding the Trojans to a mere two points in the first ten minutes of play. Carrying a 20-2 lead into the second quarter, the Hawks continued to maintain control of the momentum and took a commanding 31-17 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
The second half was a different story, as the Hawks were held to a total of 19 points in the remainder of the contest. Virginia State battled in the third quarter to cut Chowan's lead to seven points (35-28) after a free throw by Dominique Hagins. Payne's free throw at the end of the third quarter gave Chowan a 39-29 cushion heading into the last ten minutes of play.
A 17-7 run by the Trojans at the start of the third quarter knotted the score 46-46 with 2:02 left in the game. Mobley promptly answered with a layup to shift the momentum back in favor of the Hawks. A free throw by
Jada Lee and free throw by Crenshaw secured the 50-26 victory for the Chowan Blue and White.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday as Chowan plays host to Bowie State University. Tip-off for the CIAA Northern Division match-up is slated for 2:00pm in the Helms Center.
