Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University women's basketball team earned their second straight win on Saturday in a 65-59 victory over Winston-Salem State University. The Hawks improve to 9-5 overall with the win and improve to 3-1 against CIAA competition with the win while the Rams slide to 4-8 overall and 0-3 in the league.
Kandace Tate paced the Rams with 12 points in the setback while Briana Arnold added 11 points and seven rebounds (one offensive, six defensive). Trei Torain notched nine points for the Rams while Jasmine Carter grabbed a team-high nine rebounds (nine defensive).
Jordan Payne led all players in the contest with 20 points and 11 rebounds (two offensive, nine defensive).
Dhyamond Crenshaw added 17 points for the Chowan Blue and White while
Jada Lee added eight points, four rebounds (one offensive, three defensive) and four steals.
The Rams grabbed the momentum at the start of the first quarter, taking an early lead until Payne's free throw with 2:35 on the clock tied the score 11-11.
Courtni Williams hit a jumper for the Hawks to push Chowan ahead 13-11 and propelled the Hawks to a 15-11 lead heading into the second quarter.
Chowan continued to build on the momentum and used a layup by Mobley to pull away 25-15 by the midway point of the second quarter. The Rams closed out the quarter with a 6-1 run but the Hawks clung to a 26-21 advantage heading into halftime.
Winston-Salem State remained within striking distance throughout the third quarter before using a layup by Awa Kalmstrom at the buzzer to knot the score 39-39.
Crenshaw opened the fourth quarter with a basket and sparked 9-0 run for the Hawks, leaving the Rams trailing 48-39 with 7:33 left in the contest. With Chowan leading 57-47 and 4:25 on the clock, a pair of free throws by Tate led to an 8-1 run for the Rams narrowed the Hawks lead to a mere three points (58-55) with under two minutes left in the contest. Chowan held on to a 62-59 advantage with 25 seconds left on the clock and used three free throws by Lee to secure the 65-59 win over the Rams.
The Hawks conclude a three-game home stand on Monday in a CIAA crossover contest against Livingstone College. Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm.
