Hawks Handle Rams, Secure Sixth Straight Win

Andrew Lopez notched a career-high 25 points for the Hawks on Saturday.
Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University men's basketball team rolled to their sixth consecutive win on Saturday with an 84-67 win over Winston-Salem State in the Helms Center.  The Hawks advance to 11-3 overall and 4-0 in CIAA play with the win while the Rams slip to 6-8 on the year and 0-3 in the league with the setback.  Chowan's six-game winning streak is the longest for the men's basketball team since the 2009-10 season, when the program won eight straight contests.

William Crandall led the effort for the Rams with 18 points and seven rebounds (four offensive, three defensive) while Carlos Rankins chipped in 12 points in the setback.  Jerome Simmons added eight points for Winston-Salem State while Rayvon Harris and Terrell Leach added seven points apiece.

Kortez Smith led all players in the game with a season-high 26 points in the victory while Andrew Lopez notched a career-high 25 points for the Chowan Blue and White. Carlos Arroyo and Joe Goodwin added nine points in the victory with Goodwin and Josh Mellette each grabbing seven rebounds in the win.

The Hawks took control of the contest right from the start, using layups by Arroyo, Lopez and Goodwin to grab an early 6-0 lead.  Smith's jumper at the 15:35 mark pushed Chowan ahead 14-4, giving the Hawks all the momentum they would need in the first half.  With 7:17 on the clock and the Hawks' leading 25-17, Mellette hit a layup and Lopez answered with a three-pointer to leave Winston-Salem trailing 30-17 with 6:08 on the clock.  Smith's jumper at the end of the first half left the Rams trailing 41-26 heading into halftime.

The second half was all about the Hawks as Chowan maintained a lead of 17 or more points for the remainder of the contest before securing the 84-67 victory.

The Hawks round out a three-game home stand on Monday as they host Livingstone College in CIAA crossover play.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm.
