Box Score RALEIGH, NC- The Chowan University women's basketball team dropped a 67-64 decision to Shaw University in CIAA crossover play on Monday evening. The loss ended a four-game win streak for the Hawks.
Chowan moves to 7-5 on the season and 1-1 in CIAA play with the setback while Shaw improves to 10-4 overall and 2-0 in the league after Monday's win.
Alisha Mobley led all players in the contest with 20 points for the Hawks. She also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds (six offensive, one defensive) for the Chowan Blue and White.
Courtni Williams followed with11 points while
Dhyamond Crenshaw and
Jordan Payne added nine points apiece.
Eboni Ross paced the Lady Bears with 18 points and eight rebounds (two offensive, six defensive) while Kaula Jacks notched 14 points for Shaw. The Hawks forced 25 Shaw turnovers in the contest.
Mobley opened the contest with two free throws and Payne followed with a layup to give Chowan an early 4-0 advantage. Chowan clung to the momentum early in the contest. The Hawks held an 8-4 lead at the 6:27 mark before a layup by Ross sparked a 17-4 run for the Lady Bears to leave the Hawks trailing 21-12 heading into the second quarter.
Shaw hung on to the lead through the first five minutes of the second quarter.
Shaikeyla Jordan's three-pointer with 4:55 on the clock put the Hawks within striking distance (31-26). The Hawks persistently chipped away at the deficit, using a jumper by
Jada Lee, layup by Mobley and bucket by Crenshaw to tie the score 35-35 with 21 seconds on the clock. Ross hit a jumper at the close of the second quarter to leave the Hawks trailing 37-35 heading into halftime.
The Lady Bears opened the third quarter with an 11-2 run to pull away 48-37 by the 2:33 mark. Chowan refused to back down in the fourth quarter and battled to stay close on the Lady Bears' heels. Trailing 52-43 with 8:13 left in the game, a layup by Payne and back-to-back jumpers by Williams made the score 52-49. Chowan and Shaw exchanged baskets over the final minutes of play before Lee's three-pointer at the 4:32 mark put the Hawks within one point (58-57).
The Lady Bears clung to a 65-62 advantage with 17 seconds on the clock before Mobley scored a layup to make it a one point game. Two made free throws by Shaw in the final seconds of play resulted in the 67-64 win for the Lady Bears.
The Hawks return to action on January 7th when they host Johnson C. Smith University in CIAA crossover play. Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm.
