Box Score RALEIGH, NC- The Chowan University men's basketball team earned their fourth straight win on Monday with a 74-58 victory over Shaw University in CIAA crossover play. The Hawks improve to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in the league with the win while the Bears slide to 4-10 on the year and 1-1 against CIAA competition.
Four players scored double-digit points for Chowan in the win led by
Marco Haskins with 16 points.
Kortez Smith added 14 points for the Chowan Blue and White while
Andrew Lopez notched 13 points.
Joe Goodwin recorded a double-double in the win with 12 points and 13 rebounds (five offensive, eight defensive).
Joell Hopkins Jr. led the effort for Shaw with 15 points and seven rebounds (four offensive, three defensive). David Madol added seven points for the Bears in the setback.
Shaw jumped to a quick 4-0 lead at the start of the contest before a three-pointer by
Andrew Lopez put the Hawks on the board. Chowan remained within striking distance but was unable to take the lead until Haskins drained a three-pointer to push the Hawks ahead 20-19 with 8:24 on the clock.
Jeremy Smith answered with back-to-back buckets and Lopez added a layup to give the Hawks a seven point lead (26-19) with 6:53 remaining before halftime. The Bears battled to regain the momentum, but the Hawks had the last word as Goodwin's tip-in sent Chowan into halftime with a 35-32 lead.
The Hawks opened the second half with a 6-0 run, resulting in a 41-32 advantage by the 18:09 mark. Chowan never surrendered the advantage in the second half and used a jumper by Haskins with 13:06 on the clock to take a commanding 53-42 lead. Chowan led by double digits for the remainder of the contest and easily secured the 74-58 win.
The Hawks return to action on January 7
th as they host Johnson C. Smith University in CIAA crossover play. Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm.
