Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University women's basketball team suffered a 76-64 setback to Virginia Union University on Saturday afternoon. The loss ended a seven-game winning streak for the Hawks. Chowan moves to 14-6 overall and 8-2 in league play with the setback while Virginia Union improves to 15-2 on the year 7-2 against CIAA competition with the victory.
Kiana Johnson led all players in the game with 30 points. Lady Walker added 22 points and 12 rebounds (four offensive, eight defensive) while Taylor White drained 11 points and 14 rebounds (three offensive, 11 defensive).
Dhyamond Crenshaw paced the Hawks with 20 points.
Alisha Mobley netted 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds (two offensive, eight defensive) while
Mercedes Tapia added nine points in the setback.
Jamika Ruffin opened the contest with a layup but Tapia answered with a three-pointer to push Chowan ahead 3-2. The Hawks and Lady Panthers exchanged baskets until the midway point of the first quarter when Crenshaw's free throw knotted the score 6-6. On the Hawks' next possession, Mobley hit a layup to spark a 12-2 run for Chowan. After leading by as many as 10 points (18-8) with 2:35 on the clock, the Hawks held onto the advantage and carried a 22-15 heading into the second quarter.
Chowan and Virginia Union battled early in the second quarter. The Lady Panthers chipped away at the deficit and managed to knot the score 30-30 with 3:42 on the clock. Both teams continued to battle down the final stretch of the quarter before Johnson's three-pointer at the buzzer sent both teams into the locker room tied 36-36.
Tapia got the Hawks rolling in the third quarter with back-to-back three pointers. Walker's layup at the midway point gave the Lady Panthers a narrow 46-44 advantage, but Chowan battled back to pull away 58-54 heading into the final ten minutes of play.
The momentum shifted in favor of the Lady Panthers in the fourth quarter. With the score tied 58-58 and 8:37 left in the game, Johnson drained a free throw to give Virginia Union the advantage. The Lady Panthers never surrendered the lead in the remainder of the contest and took advantage of free throw opportunities down the stretch to secure the 76-64 win.
Chowan returns to action on February 3
rd as they travel to Bowie State University for a CIAA Northern Division match-up. Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm.
