Lions Rally past Hawks in Overtime

Box Score LINCOLN, PA- The Chowan University men's basketball team dropped a 77-71 overtime decision to Lincoln University (PA) on Wednesday evening. The Hawks slip to 14-5 on the season and 7-2 in CIAA play with the setback while the Lions improve to 8-13 overall and 6-4 in the league after the CIAA Northern Division win.

Jeremy Smith led the effort for the Hawks with 17 points in the setback. Kortez Smith added 16 points for the Chowan Blue and White while Marco Haskins and Warren Powers each drained 10 points apiece. Josh Mellette hauled in a team-high eight rebounds (three offensive, five defensive).

The Lions had five players score double-digit points in the win led by Joshua Davis with 16 points. Jordan Watson and Vernon Young added 12points in the contest with Quaman Burton and Blair Davis each scoring 10 points each.

The Hawks and Lions exchanged points early in the first half before a three-pointer by Sean James with 11:37 on the clock gave Lincoln (PA) a 12-9 lead. The Lions built on the momentum until the 6:34 mark when Antonio Depina drained a three-pointer to push Lincoln (PA) ahead 28-15. Down but not out, the Hawks rallied back with a 19-2 run in the remaining minutes of the first half capped by Carlos Arroyo's layup, to take a narrow 34-30 lead heading into halftime.

Joe Goodwin opened the second half with a jumper for the Hawks. Chowan held to the advantage until the 13:22 mark when Davis hit a jumper to push the Lions ahead 40-39. Haskins answered with a three-pointer on Chowan's next possession but Davis' layup knotted the score 42-42. James' three-pointer for Lincoln (PA) shifted the momentum in favor of the Lions before Andrew Lopez's three-pointer with 8:18 left in the game restored the advantage (53-51) to the Chowan Blue and White.

The Hawks and Lions battled down the final stretch of regulation, with each team vying for control of the momentum and the lead. Chowan clung to a 65-61 advantage with 2:06 left in the game before a jumper by Watson and two free-throws by Burton knotted the score 65-65 with 37 seconds on the clock. A layup by Goodwin pushed Chowan ahead 67-65 but Burton hit a jumper with six seconds left in the game to force the contest into overtime.

The Lions opened the overtime period with two free throws and a jumper to quickly grab the momentum. Lincoln (PA) held on to the lead and never looked back, securing the 77-71 win on their home court.

The Hawks return to action on January 30th when they play host to Virginia Union University in CIAA Northern Division play. The contest will be televised through Urban Sports & Entertainment Group on ASPiRE TV. Additionally long-time coach Bob Burke will be honored at halftime as the court is formally named "Bob Burke Court".

Tip-off is slated for 4:05pm.
